The point is it will be a "renaultsport clio". Doesn't matter about the looks etc. Its like a Pug 205 GTI or a CTR, they just are!
It should still become an iconic hot hatch. People (not on here) go on about the Mk1 172 clios and how great they are (looks wise) and to me they look pretty ugly and dated compared to a Mk2 or MK3. Still a 172 though so all is forgivable.
Heck a CTR is a pretty ugly car but the fact it is 1) a Honda, 2) offers suberb performance 3) its appealing (like fishnets and knee high boots on a minger in a red light district of amsterdam) in a strange way makes it a desirable car. Same with an imprezza or evo, neither of which are pretty cars but by offering something else become hugely desirable.
A list price on a full fat 182 was near 16k iirc. Just cause they could be had for less didn't mean everyone paid less.
£16,500 seems pretty reasonable for a hot hatch now, considering what is available. The VX astra is a great example of where prices have gone to high on the SRI models. Up to 4k above list on the outging models for the top spec. Fair enough all the new cars have more to offer but as everyone is fishing in the same pond the price rises seem steep. I wouldn't say the new golf GTI or current civic range are good value either. Going of current prices on the base range the new civic type r could be pretty £££ and the normal civic isn't all that.
These hot hatches are encroaching into other territory which makes the less apealing. For example, in a similar afordability price range, your choice is out of a VXR, Focus ST, Golf GTI, megan 225, RX8, imprezza wrx, civic type r (incomming), mazda 3 mps, mazda 6 mps, clio 197, octavia vrs, etc.
No longer clear cut on the financial side. Where cars like the pug 106 gti, saxo vts, corsa 1.8sri, seat ibiza cupra, old octavia vrs, pug 206 gti were hot hatches at a relatively low cost (specially as their range came to an end) the new ones are in a whole difference £££ playing field. The clio 172/182 stood out as they could be bought for such a relatively small amount.
What will make the 197 stand out is if you can get it through the brokers for 14k making it outshine the other available cars on £££. Should also have resonable running costs (eg mpg) with the na engine over the turbo'd counterparts.
