Clio Cup's

I like ABS as it gives you the option of being able to drive around an object in the scenario of you hitting the said object. Plus, as long as it doesnt cut in too early, then it can be quite discrete.

ABS is very very useful for those brainfade moments we all have every now and then - you know, the one where you get mesmerised by your odometer reading for a second and then look up to see the traffic in front has come to a halt. Anyone who says they never ever have this sort of thing happen to them is quite likely someone who drives very very little or is a bit of a fibber.

However, I really don't like it, and was never comfortable with it on the Mondeo - I like to be able to unsettle the car with the brake pedal (though the diff works just as well for that on the Volvo) and I what I really don't like is the way ABS goes bonkers on uneven surfaces and snow/greasy roads.

Agreed it sometimes feels weird and really un-nerving, it's an odd feeling and at the time it's hard to realise that it's stopping you quicker!

Thanks for that post bmh.01, great stuff!

All I need to know really is how well the 172FF handles. I've yet to have a car with ABS, i've yet to have a car with A/C so it's hardly like I will miss them.

The cup's are cheaper to buy which is a good thing but if I'm doing a 25 mile commute in the summer I may want A/C.

I've seen a few people on cliosport mention they have changed the springs on their cup. Why? Thought they handled well as standard???

I do love cup blue paint though:D
They do handle well but people like to go lower and changing to aftermarket suspension components can improve the handling still.

My 172FF is on eibach pro-kit springs which don't really lower the car much but are much more focussed towards improved handling. Mine handles well past my expectations and needs on the road anyway.

Looks like this now (bear in mind its on 15s rather than the stock 16s so its a little higher than i'd like):

Also to add people tend to find (i certainly have) that they handle better on 15s ala the Ph1 172 compared to the 16s fitted to the Ph2 despite the slight suspension revisions to work better with the 16s.

What's the reason F1 cars don't have ABS? Is that just to do with the FIA regulations?

You would think if it was better and they were allowed it, they would have it.

It would make driving to easy and therefore detract from the racing (e.g. the possibility of someone braking too heavily and locking a wheel going into a corner).

F1 is goverend by regs that mean that all the fancy stuff like ground effect, full slicks, traction control etc are banned.

Ah right, I know from all the karting that I do it's handy not having ABS as it allows trail braking, totally different in cars though.

ABS = the most pointless trash ever invented for a car. I have a full fat 172 and hate the ABS. I've been driving for 17 years, 14 before the Clio and its the thing I hate most about the car. Go over a bump when you're on the brakes - judder judder. Hit the brakes going into a corner - judder judder. Hit the brakes in snow when you actually do want to skid - judder judder.

Conclusion. The damn things are rubbish and if you need them then you shouldnt be on the road imo.

I have a 172 and don’t have this issue? Maybe you have cheap or rubbish tyres on the car or your ABS isn’t working right? Why would the ABS come on if you brake entering a corner unless you apply them hard enough for the wheels to lock up? I drive it very hard sometimes and the brakes are spot on.. My ABS has only ever come on twice, that was harsh braking in the wet when I had some rubbish tyres on and when I went over a speed bump too fast and pressed the brake. I’d also describe it as a vibration through the brake pedal, the car doesn’t judder at all.
