Cloning question

I tried google search but didn't get the sort of specific answer I'm after.

Basically I keep toying with getting an ssd for many reasons and a new idea is to replace my 1tb hdd main drive however I currently have under 230gb left so I only want the os cloned/transfered over and keep the rest stored as it is

Is this possible or is a fresh install the only way to achieve this task?

Delete the data that you don't want on the hard drive. Clone the hard drive to ssd. Restore data from your backup to the hdd.

Personally, I would just do a fresh install. Can't beat a fresh install.

Okay thanks for reply, sounds like it would be the better option then, doesn't seem to take too long to install 8.1 either.
