Hi guys,

Firstly I'd like to thank everyone who has responded to my threads dotted all over various sections of the forum in the last few weeks. I have learned a great deal and ended up at what I hope is a nicely balanced and good value for money system.

I would appreciate any final comments before I hit the order button. To be totally honest I would like to shave a little bit more off the cost of this if it can be done in areas which don't compromise the build too much. Maybe I could save a bit on the PSU, ram and cooler for example (its a little disappointing as some 3000MHz ram was on offer last week and a good cooler is currently discounted but it is too big for my case). I am tempted to hold on until next week's offers and hope to hit one on my build.

There is no GPU in this build now because I am waiting for the AMD RX480 to appear. There is no OS either as I will be sorting this out separately.

If anyone does have any further suggestions I would really appreciate it. The price cannot go up from this now - I am at my absolute limit! But if it can go down then great.

Total: £699.88

You want low profile ram with most aftermarket coolers otherwise the ram wont fit in the first ram slot, something like the Corsair Vengeance LPX.

Thanks I'll take a look.

Case has 2 fans already, surely you dont need a 3rd?

I discussed cooling and the specific case quite extensively in the cooling section of the forum, and it was recommended that I go for three fans in the front and none in the back or top. So I was going to move the rear fan that the case comes with to the front and buy one extra one. A second opinion would be welcomed.

Thanks for the point. However I definitely can't afford a G-sync monitor, and I don't want to spend more than £200 on the GPU. So I think whatever happens with the RX480 I would be having an AMD GPU because the nvidia are out of my price range entirely.

I'd be quite happy if the RX480 was inbetween gtx970 and gtx980 level, so based on that I'm not expecting any major set back in that area. The price of it would be the only concern.

I should also have said I have no existing monitor, so if I was to hold off on the monitor I may as well hold off on my whole build.

Additionally, OCUK don't appear to sell the anti static wrist bands. Surprising - unless anyone can point me to them?

Thanks.

What i would say is scratching around for a few quid savings here and there isnt the issue. Id have to get a 15m ethernet cable so may as well buy the £15 wifi card.

But with wanting to get a cheap laptop too for relaxing on the sofa with im looking to save on a big ticket item.

Plus the 480 gpu will likely come in at £230 so adding a bit there too.

Hence why considering dropping to an i3 to save enough to make it worthwhile.

FYI a 15 m cat5e ethernet cable is about £5.60.

Sounds like you need to get the requirements straight then before anything else happens. Maybe ask a mod to lock your various threads so people (like me) don't keep chipping in. :)

Final comment - I can't see anywhere in your threads any description of the actual games etc. you're interested in. Next time definitely share this information as it might be you don't need a high-end machine at all.

Just to pick up on this a little. I think part of the issue is that I was undecided on whether to get a laptop or a desktop for a long time. My usage points to a laptop, although when I started looking around I was not happy with the price/performance ratio. So I made room in my living room for a desktop instead, but could still do with something that I can relax on the sofa with.

I did in one of my original threads talk about the games I wanted to play. Planet Coaster is one, Cities skylines is another. Planet Coaster has quite high demands to get reasonable performance by all accounts, although the game is not out yet.

The biggest issue in all of this I think is the tendency to keep incrementing the spec of the build. Its always little amounts here and there until you kind of get to i7 level for which there is a big jump. That's what's happened, Ive up-specced and up-specced until the jump became too big. In my mind this means I have obtained the maximum price/performance ratio that I can. However I have no idea what actual CPU i really need.

With all due respect to joeyjojo who posted the build a few pages up, its only dropped about £95 off my original build yet at the expense of 8GB ram, a poorer case, a worse cooler and the wifi card. If its a choice between £95 then my original build is fine. I need to save £200 on it to make it worth while, which I can do if I sacrifice things like the CPU and Z170 board - but I don't know if that is a bad decision or not.

Here is a substantially cheaper build for example.

And all ive really changed is to drop the 6600k for a cheaper Athlon and drop ram down to 8GB. If ram was like for like 16GB in both builds the difference would be £210. Is an Intel i5-6600K really worth a £210 price increase?

Im going for this build.

Is there any reason I should not buy this now? Will some offers/price reductions come on in the future on these components? Am I being naive buying without the GPU not knowing exactly what will come at the end of the month?

Well I just tried to order it and twice my order failed at the secure code stage of payment.

Triple checked all the card details 2nd time round. Ive emailed customer services, but I guess I won't be getting this by Friday now.

Yeah, no text message, no phone call, no email, no message in online banking. Ive messaged my bank too.

I wondered if it had something to do with the delivery address I was putting in being different to my billing address. I did notice when selecting the payment card that both addresses default to the billing address and I then had to enter them separately again.

Gonna struggle sorting it out in the morning, am away with work all day. Oh well.

Didn't know about this, thanks. The Gigabyte k3 + i5-6600k combo is on the site too with cashback of £24. I just buy it from here, then apply for the cashback is that right?

This is odd though. When I click on the claim form I get this message:

The claim form is currently closed, the online form will be available after 30 days from your date of purchase. Please note that claims must be submitted no sooner than 30 days and no later than 60 days from your invoice date. Please return to the online claim form after 30 days from your purchase date in order to submit your claim.

So how does it know when to open the claim form if I have purchased from a site such as this one?

Right. It is confusing that message. It implies that the website somehow knows your purchase date and therefore when to open the form.

But if the offer only started 3 days ago then that makes sense. I see this was what people were alluding to above so sorry for being thick.

Does anyone know if saturday counts as a working day for the free DPD delivery option?

Because of my card messing up I wasn't able to order last night and missed the 4pm cut off today for delivery tomorrow. But if I order it now will it be delivered saturday or monday?

Danlightbulb have you read any of the comments! I mentioned ages ago that they probably open it 30 days after the start date of the promotion. Just write it your calendar or set a reminder on your phone. I've done a couple of claimbacks before and they are pretty straightforward (just don't delete the email with your electronic invoice!)

Yeah sorry I can see now you said that earlier - I hadn't clocked it properly, or that the promotion had only just started.

Is there any reason that the motherboard+cpu bundle on sale here would not qualify for the rebate offer, perhaps because they weren't bought separately but as one item?
