I've just received a letter from Pipex regarding the fair usage policy (I'm on £24 /month 1MB line) I didn't sign up originally with a cap so I've requested a MAC address to change ISP's.

Any recommendations for cheap/reliable/uncapped ISP/tarrifs? No more than £24 a month.

Nildram? Dispite some of the trouble they had a week back it's normal now, I can't fault them myself.

The cap on the 8Mbps is 50GB but that only applies from 8am - midnight (from midnight - 8am it's uncapeed) and it's £25.99

It's more than your paying now by £1.99 though. :(

Still have "fair usage policy" I could understand it on sub £18 tariffs, but not >£20

Unless I can find a unlimited DSL ISP I might just cancel it altogether. :(

It's extremely unlikely you're going to find an ADSL ISP offering an unlimited service for <£25 without even the possibility of a FUP, and it's virtually impossible that it'll stay unlimited.

The closest is probably the Enta resellers with high off peak limits, like UKFSN.

AOL isn't unlimited. See this thread for starters.
Plusnet's pretty crap (and definitely isn't unlimited), and now BT own them it remains to be seen if it'll get any worse.

Plus net did go down when bt took over but the past 7 days it really had improved i been downloading at 645kb at the moment

as said before- you probably wont find an isp unlimited or without a fair use policy unless you get a business or office package. at the end of the day isp's pay for bandwidth, if you're using more bandwidth than your subscription is worth you're cutting into their profits that they make off people who dont use all of what they pay for.

You can try efhbroadband, they do a 512/256K which is uncapped and no throttling at £17.99. But it's only 512K down.

You wont find a decent ISP with what you're looking for.

The problem with Pipex and probably many other providers is that they are constantly changing their packages in order to remain competitive while leaving their existing customers on old tariffs. The £24/month 1mb unlimited package disappeared long ago but to cap it without a change of contract was somewhat underhand on their part.

If you can afford an extra 99p a month Pipex currently do £24.99/month 8mb unlimited package (pipexmax broadband only) if your line is up to it. There may be a one off (re)connection charge but in my experience they may well choose to waive it rather than lose an existing customer.

Nildram are owned by Pipex and virtually all their services have a fair usage policy unless you go for a top end package which will cost a lot more than you are currently paying. AFAIK there are very few packages around available for under £25 so staying with Pipex might be one of the few options left available to you.

There shouldn't be a connection fee (though they might charge a the same amount and call it a "cancellation fee" if you want to leave before the contract's up) if your ADSL's already activated. You will wind up in a new 12 month contract though.

The £25/month Pipex "upto 8mb" doesn't look too bad, only a couple of quid more than existing tariff.

As long as Pipex don't decide to change the "unlimited" policy to "fair usage" down the line.

I got the Pipex nasty-o-gram yesterday and I'm not particularly happy about it either.

Thanks for the link, looks ideal in many ways. Their off-peak allowance is almost unreal. Do you have any further opinion on Etna?

(Old infrequent poster, forgot user/pass.)

They're not that bad... but they are having issues at the start of peak time with everyone kicking off downloads and everything grinding to a halt.
It remains to be seen how long they can sustain buying Centrals too.

Plus net did go down when bt took over

PlusNet have been going the hill for more than a year, let alone since BT Retail bought them out.

Eh, I don't understand much of that past the ellipsis :)

Do you mean issues at the start of off-peak time when everyone starts to download (i.e. 2200)? Does it improve over time or is it essentially unusable at any time off-peak?

Ah, I googled. BT central pipes. And BT can't lower the price of the Centrals because of OFCOM's enforcement of the "Margin Squeeze Test".

No swearing!, broadband is FUBARed in this country it seems.

Pipex have had a fair use policy in effect since 05 and I'm pretty sure it applies to all their contracts.

Just to clarify, I'm on that unlimited 8 meg service and I've had the same letter. I'm moving onto Be as soon as it's available in my area.

edit:

Infact the letter pipex sent you pretty clearly states that you have three options.

1. Move down to a cheaper rate and pay for the extra you use.
2. Join Bulldog.
3. Get a Mac code and go somewhere else.

Primus telecom do a broadband service which is uncapped and unthrottled. Something like £14 and £17 for the 1 or 2mbit services respectively.

Yes, it'll fluctuate at around 2mb+ until about 12 then it'll start going up again.

Have a browse tonight.
