Clothes - how old is too old?

Wouldn't put a time limit on it. Just whenever something looks worn out it's time to put it in the drawer for DIY and garden work

Apparently, it's considered good practice to buy new clothes at least once or twice a year, and not to wear anything for much longer than a year if you can help it.
based on what logical reasoning ? if something is a bid faded get some dye it's as easy as running a washing machine cycle

if something worn replace it, don't follow stupid fashion trends and your clothes won't look outdated.

some styles last forever or eventually come back anyway.

Fashion trends were only invented for one reason, to keep people buying things they don't need.
Be a sheep baa baa

A good quality brand should still look not too far off new after a year unless you are rough with it.
I've got nike hoodies that never bobbled yet after years of use, they look brand new as soon as I dye them.

Nike tshirts too although they shrunk a bit over the years and a half decent pair of jeans should last 10 years easy

I'd never buy primark rubbish the tshirts feel like they should be transparent

I don't wash my jeans for a year let alone replacing them after a year....
Hehehe, someone who knows how to deal with jeans. I’ve got jeans that are older and have never been washed! They don’t stink and neither do I.

Until it isn't wearable or I'm tired of it.

I thought it was just women that feel they have to wear something different each time, I doubt many guys pay much attention to what their mates are wearing.

I keep stuff until it starts to develop holes. I think I have some stuff that's 10-15 years old. Stuff from certain Asian countries might last 1 or 2 years.

But why would you buy stuff for the sake of it. I suspect clothes makers made up this "rule" lol

I’m don’t do this fast fashion lark. I don’t get rid of clothes unless they have fallen apart or change my mind.

My father wears The Sweater Shop jumpers and they are 25+ years old.

they basically pump out propaganda that your current clothes are outdated and unfashionable.

I totally ignore it, date some women who dress down and don't wear makeup but have natural beauty.

way more fun than clownface who will draw on the whites of her eyeballs etc

Think of the planet wear it until it wears out.
Yeah you're preaching to the converted, here. I'm not the one who wants to keep changing my clothes or buying new stuff.

But I'll have to relent and buy some crap to keep other people happy. In any case I last bought clothes >5 years ago, so I'm not a follower of fast fashion - or any fashion - it has to be said :p

But people moan about how tired my clothes are. Personally I don't care. They're just clothes. I'd walk around naked if it was legal :p (I probably wouldn't, probably).

I am still wearing tee shirts I bought from US in 2003/5 - Bass Pro stuff - really does last but neck is now looking a bit worn on some - Still not worn my Bass Pro limited edition credit card one. Filled the form in then realised what it was for and said no but they let me keep the tee shirt.
The wife keep on at me to buy some new clothes but I just can't bring myself to waste so much money when I have a wardrode full of outdate out of fashion clothes.
:D

Some interesting reading https://theprettyplaneteer.com/fashion-industry-waste/

How much waste does the fashion industry actually produce? An average consumer throws away 70 pounds (31.75 kilograms) of clothing per year. Globally we produce 13 million tons of textile waste each year 95% of which could be reused or recycled.

According to Elizabeth L. Cline, the author of Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion, we only wear our clothes 7 times on average before discarding them.

Utter madness, demand they do better!!

Replace as soon as it's one of the below;

Cannot be repaired (For instance I would repair my Barbour Jacket but I wouldn't bother repairing my Gucci belt I would just buy another 3)
Got a hole in it
Looks faded
Has marks on it
Doesn't fit
Worn out

There is no time frame for anything. I have for instance trainers I wear everyday which will last me a few years but others I wear once in a while that will last me forever. Same goes for clothes. More expensive stuff I will tend to wear less often so it will last usually 5-10 years as they are only used a handful of times per year. But something like a Barbour jacket will last a lifetime it gains character with age. I will likely pass it on too to the wee man.

I'm lucky to get more than a year out of T shirts, usually way less. That's anything from sainsburys own brand stuff, up to all saints.

Jeans I tend to replace every year or two at most. I usually just buy stretch skinny jeans or decent slim fit ones and try and wash them as little as possible. It's been a while since I've bought a decent pair of jeans though, so it's mainly been Next or similar.

I tend to change jumpers / knitwear every year, mainly due to different styles and trends that come and go. Overshirts / coats etc I can go 3+ years and only usually replace due to wanting something new

Funnily enough I've only bought 2 pairs of trainers since the first lockdown, whereas on a normal year I'd probably buy 6 or 7 pairs.

Usually I buy a new coat when the zip or pocket liners go. Need pockets for gloves etc.
you know when the pocket lining goes it's basically a giant pocket right? as long as your coat has an inner lining anyway

we used to poke a small hole in the pockets on our coats as teens cos police would usually only pat your pockets and waist band if they did a stop and search

I'm pretty much with most here, wear to it's worn out. Relegate worse stuff to DIY, gardening, etc.

When i was younger i did buy a good few Tees, hoodies, etc to support small companies, but i now i just don't despite wanting to, it's just wasteful. I have enough Tees for a life time now. And yet the Tee i'm wearing right now is at least 15yrs old, and that's with lots of bike riding usage in it too.

I've had plenty of additional wear out of holey underwear too.

Though i do have some decent "outdoor" gear which will probably last forever.

I bought a 5 pack of sport socks from M&S, absolute garbage. Think those will go in the clothing bank when i can be bothered. Fluffy, but just stay in place. These days i just cba to spend money willy nilly, so much rubbish out there, so easier to not bother. Consequently holes in underwear :D
