I have finally broken away from Apple (yay for me) and I want to find a replacement to icloud with a few more added features. I have being doing some research this past week and still cant decide.

I am looking for storage and backup with sync if possible. I have looked at Google Drive (no backup) Pogoplug (looks good, confusing plans) Microshaft Live drive (do I want to go from apple to MS?)

There are loads of other too. I wonder if you people have any recommendations?

I use Wuala simply because it is encrypted before it leaves my PC meaning no nosy buggers can see it including the people at Wuala.... I don;t have anything dodgy but its still none of their business :p

BTW, that Verge guide is old. GDrive (for example) has public sharing now.

For simple 'cloud' storage I use Box, Dropbox, Skydrive, Google Drive and Flickr (photos) and use the Jolidrive service to help me keep things organised. All as good and as bad as each other to be honest.

Best off just getting a NAS tbh and a few good reliable hdds for a raid 10 array. Could use your own pc as a server then to access your files when out and about through FTP as long as you have a static IP address. Failing that, get a NAS and simply upload anything you might need elsewhere to skydrive (which is pretty much what I do anyway, as the mrs backs her stuff up to one of my 1tb hdds as well as I do)

Thanks for the suggestions so far chaps. Maybe I actually don't need backup, maybe I just need storage and Dropbox will be fine.

I just got an S4 in the US, but on verizon it did not come with the 50GB free which is a pain.

Get yourself a 1TB 2.5" laptop drive and an enclosure and build it yourself. Runs off USB power. Cheaper than buying an external hard drive at RRP. Then carry it in your bag so that you have an off-site backup solution.

Kind of missing the point of cloud storage. So all you precious data is on pc and nas, some scroat breaks in goodbye data

Cloud storage is the way forward.... More redundancy than any home nas, and your data is available from anywhere.

It's abit spendy though, but I got 50gb dropbox with my s4 :-)

I think YOU are missing the point here....

I think I will take my chances with the scroat. He still has to get past me and my security systems...

Why not just buy a 2TB drive for < £100 - a 32GB USB stick for £10 - back your whole PC/files to the HD and store at your mum and dads - your commonly accessed files to the USB and hide it anywhere safe.

Cloud storage has a long way to come before being anyway viable as a secure, personal / preferred way of storing anything important.

But - by all means, give up your life / information to some random company in the hope they will look after it / not trade the contents - that's why Facebook is still going strong ;).

250GB, syncs a directory, iOS and android apps, cheap enough, works well.
