Cloud Storage college project

Thanks to those who took it seriously, and not so much to those who directly hostility towards me, or gave stupid answers - they have been removed. This is actually worth a large chunk of my grade, so I had hoped that this would be a serious forum with members who would understand that.

And no, I am not going to post this and stop using the forum. Well I wasn't planning to anyway, but I haven't had the warmest of welcomes. Until yesterday, I hadn't considered using this forum as anything I needed to know prior to this, I asked on Stack Overflow. In fact, I have spent a lot of time on Overclockers - just not the forum. Additionally, it is all quite new to me. I haven't yet had much to discuss!

Anyway, as for the survey, yes it is focused on the basics. It is a level 3 course so who we can reach out to and our knowledge is limited, or at least mine is.

Question 2A should probably have allowed the user to select every option instead of just one. All those concerns are valid.

Anyway... we are actually a friendly bunch here. But there has been a history of people posting and running after similar questionnaires. But welcome to the forum and we hope you'll stick around :)

Thank you guys. Much appreciated :)

The concern I had with 2A was more the limited word count. I felt it was easier to ask for a main concern, as opposed to many, so that I can simply comment on the most common concern.

In hindsight, I would have changed many things about the survey. One reason being that so many people have answered the wrong sections (I have to say, mainly from people who are not members of this forum!) which is going to make interpreting the information quite difficult!

Hi new, I am diddums. Thanks for your first post begging for help. Whilst this is not kosher around these parts, I'll do the survey for you later because I'm a ray of sunshine :)

Hang on, are you Diddums or a ray of sunshine?

I find "the cloud" to be a very irritating phrase - why lie? Just call it what it is - someone else's computer.

Responded

If I have broken any rules, I am not doing so intentionally!
Worth reading the Rules if you haven't already

Now we'll see...
I've been let down by a lot of cloud providers giving me the run around. Never gonna give never gonna give them another penny.
It didn't at first but I wouldn't give up on it. I didn't want to let the OP down.
Did I just get rick rolled?

Missed it, but Good effort!

Thanks for the responses guys - you've really helped me! I'm going to stop accepting responses for now, so I can try and get a range from people less technical.

Spot on. I remember drawing the damn things at University (some good few years ago now).
Andi.

You think cloud storage is some guy with a Raspberry Pi in his basement in Basingstoke that looks after your files for you?
Could easily be some guy at M$, Google, Apple, BT ...... sitting in their basement "looking after" your stuff. My cloud is in the loft.

I'm not sure it is possible actually. Probably as likely as some guy in his basement in Basingstoke looking through your files in your loft...

I certainly wouldn't use my own cloud from my own home. (Well, I do have a file server, I don't think, like yours, that counts as cloud.) One reason I use cloud is for piece of mind, should my flat burn down/get robbed. It's good to have backup off site.

It's not though, is it? Companies such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Backblaze, Dropbox etc all have to adhere to the relevant standards regarding data protection and data security. They will undergo audits to ensure that they are compliant. Whilst inevitably they still can be hacked, and mistakes can still be made, the levels they go to are surely vastly better than any individual.

Your cloud in your loft doesn't help when your house burns down though? A lot of people value cloud based backups as another option in their backup strategy, in addition to multiple physical backups.

Very trusting - data protection is only applicable to the country the servers are in. A lot of companies are setting up in the UK because the US are opening up data tp their government. Even so cloud servers can be anywhere - Russia if it was cheap.
As for the loft, after a risk assessment, it is ok for my needs. But yes a trustworthy offsite store would be a benefit. 25 million homes in the UK about 180 house fires a month, that's about 0.0012%.
I don't remember ever being even close to a house fire.
I do remember a fire at a DEC data centre some years ago though that didn't turn out to be too well protected. That's life I guess.

Ahhhh cloud storage. I've never understood the attraction in sending all your pics and files to random strangers. It's bizarre.

Once you've completed your research, maybe you can explain why people do it. :)

Then use client side encryption. That way the cloud storage provider just has a bunch of highly encrypted data they can't look at. I know some of the cloud storage people do this as standard :)
