Well i bet its been asked million times but im thick lol
Well which Codec pack do you guys recommend
Im wanting a full pack that dont put too much uneeded stuff on my pc.

Thanks

I don't recommend any codec pack, use VLC Media Player.

If you have to have a codec pack then I think it's ffdshow that people go with, can't remember.

Ok lol
So will this play all my dvds on pc that have been converted to Avi files?

I have just re installed all my pc and in the process of sorting my films out but wmp wont play them as there is a codec missing

Well im still only on Xp pro
So whatever you guys recommend will be taken into account

Thanks

It's really up to you which player you'd prefer to use: Windows Media Player or VLC Media Player.

If you want to use Windows Media Player then install ffdshow (I think it's ffdshow, you'll have to double check).

If you want to use VLC Media Player then, of course, install it and go :)

if your using vista.
Vista codec pack and x64 component tools (if 64bit).

VLC is good. But WMP is a much better player.

Agreed.

I could never get .mkv files to work properly in Vista MC untill I installed those two packages.

I'm running Vista x64 with just the Vista Codec Pack, I haven't found any need to be running the x64 components because I'm using the 32-bit player and it plays nearly everything including my MKVs. I watch most stuff on my TV via my Xbox which has XBMC installed which plays nearly everything as it's based on mplayer and ffmpeg, only hidef and certain quicktime things it won't play but thats due to the hardware not being up to it (it's only a 733Mhz CPU with 64MB RAM after all).

ffdshow ft.w :)

im not really a fan of vlc cos it means i have to install yet another media player when wmp does the job perfectly well, especially with ffdshow, plus i can upscale to 720 and when set up right with the guides on the net, an improvement in pic quality

VLC is ugly basic and isn't very good. However I do use it as it plays dvd's with no hassle.
WMP is a lot smarter and a lot nicer to use.

My codec setup on my media PC is very simple.

FFDshow - handles divx, xvid and lots of others.
CoreAVC - for H.264 (usually in MKV containers)
Haali media splitter - for MKVs

I use Theatertek to play them all (because it works great with a remote), and have it use FFDshow to upscale anything less than 720p resolution.

This man knows what's he's talking about! XBMC is all you'll ever need. Just buy a cheap old xbox for £20 and a £5 ethernet cable and you're all set!

That's because the component tools has little to do with 32 bit palyers.
It's to integrate the codecs into vista media player and more importantly, give you the screenshot preview in file explorer. Without it you just get WMP files or what ever your main player is. Rather than the nice screenshot.
