Codec packs

I must say, I agree with the people who have been using Windows Media Player classic now.

I've been giving the two a go since they were suggested & really like them.

Faster than VLC, the same amount of options (I'm guessing WMP Classic has all these extra options as I downloaded the maintained version from Sourceforge).

Stuff like seeking is a lot faster and more reliable, pause is a lot faster.

I highly recommend ffdshow & WMP Classic :)

Anybody know if there's a stable release of ffdshow x64 that'll be compatible with WMP Classic & 64-bit WMP 11?

Craig.

Why the **** would anyone want an XBOX taking up space when it can all be done with your PC?

Off the top of my head you wouldn't need the PC on to watch stuff, also as it's independent of the PC so your other half could be watching something while you happily play a game or something.

Not everyone's PCs are in close proximity to the TV either.

Been using the latest x64 version of Media Player classic & the Vista Codec Pack x64 (don't forget the component pack as well) for a bit now, works quite well :)

Seems you need the proper compatible version of WMP Classic x64 that's been created for the Vista Codec Pack, I didn't have the right version to start with & got no video output.

Do a page search for "Homecinema x64 Edition" on http://shark007.testbox.dk/

Ahhh sorry I thought you meant as an accompaniment to your PC, not as a replacement for viewing. :)

Yeah I have it hooked up to my TV so I can watch stuff away from my PC, I put a 120GB hard drive in it and XBMC runs FileZilla FTP Server so it's easy to FTP things across. It also have full access to the Internet so you can stream nearly any format as long as there is no DRM on it. It can also access NAS devices, windows shares, iTunes shares, nearly anything. They are porting it to Linux at the moment, there was talk of a 360 version but I don't think it's feasible plus I wouldn't want anything that loud in my living room whilst watching videos.

That's because the component tools has little to do with 32 bit palyers.
It's to integrate the codecs into vista media player and more importantly, give you the screenshot preview in file explorer. Without it you just get WMP files or what ever your main player is. Rather than the nice screenshot.

So I can install x64 Components and run the 32-bit media player? Why does it contain some codecs for the 64-bit player, do some people run both of them?

Yes, it's so you can use the proper 64-bit WMP 11 and the 64-bit version of MPC HC (Media Player Classic Home Cinema x64) and other 64-bit players.

The x64 pack with the components add-on will still work with 32-bit players :)

I use WMP Classic with the K-Lite codec pack, runs everything I've thrown at it.

I love WMP classic, lightweight, simple interface, works for DVDs as well.

I would rather install codecs manually instead of a pack which probably has a ton of unneccessary stuff, but I don't know enough about them.

if your using vista.
Vista codec pack and x64 component tools (if 64bit).

VLC is good. But WMP is a much better player.

Just installed the codec pack (thanks for the heads-up) and finally... I can play all my stuff with WMP instead of VLC. VLC is good in its' compatability, but as for user-friendliness it's a mile behind, WMP is much better in that respect and quality of video is just the same. Bye Bye VLC. :)

It's great isn't it :). Exactly the same reason I Proffer WMP for video play back.

I've been using VLC recently since I switched to Vista as my main OS, but as been mentioned has a really crap interface and it doesn't handle certain files very well, such as .flv (which MPC handles perfectly).

I prefer MPC (with CCCP or K-Lite), but it doesn't like Aero very much (screen flickers when going fullscreen while Vista switches to Basic theme). I don't care about that Aero transparency crap, but the Basic mode is bright blue and I like dark visual styles. :/

Anyone know how to sort this? Would love to use MPC again.
