Easy question: What's the best codecs package to use to get WM11 actually playing something? I know there's loads out there but not too clued up on the best ones to use.

So it's a toss up between the two then? Can I install both of them?

No you don't want to install codec pack as it'll screw your machine up. FFDSHOW will do everything you need. Xvid and Divx plus others.

Ignore Tony Williams "advice" about K-Lite.

I've setup a HTPC so into video playback and FFDSHOW plays everything. And it'll scale and apply post processing filters if you want (ie macro block removal)

The newest version of K-Lite comes with FFDShow and handy tools, why no one would want to use it for I don't know, your about the first person I've seen ever diss such program. I have used it for years.

How many times do I see the words best codec pack? Couple of bad reviews, but that's normal.

I guess this thread is now finished but I have a question on a similar vein.

I have an MP4 video which plays fine in Media Player 11 but when I try to convert it to DVD with WinAVI it says the file is broken or the codec is missing.

I installed an MP4 codec but then it wouldn't play at all so I had to do a restore.

Any thoughts?

quicktime alternative should fix it..

try that and ffdshow, and remove the mp4 codec you have

I don't know why people are ripping on K-Lite, I've tried CCCP myself, but never got used to it, I still perfered K-Lite (I'm not putting CCCP down or anything) just that I've always used K-Lite and have never ever had any trouble with it. It handles both Quicktime and Real alt.

dont install klite, its a pile of pants

ffdshow or cccp

With you on this, CCCP its a good quality codec pack, its very small and will do the job no probs for playing everything.

I used to use Megacodec pack, and that was a massive 50 meg download, I never liked klite at all, but when CCCP came along, it played all files no probs.... at around 4 meg download, lol....

Hmmm no brainer imho

just curious here, but why do people keep saying K-Lite is so bad?

Because due to incompetence they didn't setup their pc properly and something went wrong so they blamed it on the codec pack. Or they haven't even used one but because someone said it messed their machine up they take their word for it and tell everyone else it screws their machine up which isn't true. Or they are using a 50mb hard drive and they consider that it takes up too much space.

Well said. K-Lite has improved a lot over the past year I still liked it a while back and it's 32MB now.

All codec packs are pants. You've not seen many complaints because you've not looked...

We'll ignore the fact that half the stuff in the K-lite pack is totally illegal.

Real Alternative
Quicktime Alternative
XviD
H264
FFDShow if there's anything not working after that.

Why the hell the K-Lite pack contains FFDShow on top of the codecs is beyond me... it does the same.... :\

Agreed. I'll just keep quiet that the posters above think K-Lite is better than installing FFDSHOW, then individual codecs when/if you need them.

Like you said, FFDSHOW plays Divx & Xvid, so why install Divx and Xvid codecs as well? I have a HTPC so play a lot of video and music files, I only need FFDSHOW and Theatretek.

I guess though people install K-lite and everything works, it will but there's no need to install dozens of codecs.

if you dont install xvid and divx, then you can't encode in them, thats the only reason i use them on top of ffdshow :)

Your well informed. If the codec packs were illegal they wouldn't be avalible on so many public websites with no companies trying to sue them.
