Your well informed. If the codec packs were illegal they wouldn't be avalible on so many public websites with no companies trying to sue them.

I don't know why the likes of Cyberlink don't sue. I don't care either. I'm happy doing things to legit way and everything working the way it should.

You'll also find many less codec-related issues if you do things manually and think what you're actually doing. So much more control over what does what.

LOL
If they are illegal how come they appear for download on many websites.
Guess what - give me five minutes and I bet I could find website downloads for numerous commercial software packages.
Just because they are available for download doesn't make them legal - how naive are you?

Most of these codec packs do indeed contain illegally ripped codecs from commercial packages/companies.
For some reason people don't seem to think codecs have an owner - that they are free to all.
These are usually the same people that think all fonts are free too.

One persons blog.... Clearly they aren't illegal like he's saying otherwise they would have been sued.

Just the first blog on a google search that returned 150k results for "codec pack illegal"...

Ironically the first result was for the K-Lite site, which states "Sharing copyrighted material without the permission to do so is illegal". Awesome :D

You do realise that "codec pack illegal" is going to bring up thousands of questions with that phrase in and then even more misinformed people?

i dont know what you are even arguing about tbh......it includes codec from software that is only available to buy, there for breaking the agreement of the software the codecs ship with. can people not understand this?

the cccp project is probably the best codec pack out there, I have never come across a video that won't play properly after installing it.

Obviously theres a little more to it than that or there would be lawsuits. If I worried about everything like you people do I don't think I'd be able to get through life lol.

I read a while back too that they were illegal, it probberly is but so are many over things on the net (I know 1millions wrongs don't = right) and the majorty (<< NOT EVERYONE) of people don't care, hell a lot of people pirate software anyway (BTW I am not saying piracy is right). The Gordian Knot Codec Pack is the only codec pack that I'm aware of that does not use illegally gotten codecs AND does not harm your registry during installation. It's certainly not as complete a pack as k-Lite, but everything in it is freeware but I stick of K-Lite and at the end of the day it's really down to the end user and how they feel and what there needs are.

Easy question: What's the best codecs package to use to get WM11 actually playing something? I know there's loads out there but not too clued up on the best ones to use.

VLC Media Player - you don't need to mess about with codecs and risk messing something up & it plays everything :)

well thats a huge assumption isnt it? i dont care wether the pack is illegal because, and here's the important bit, i dont NEED it. ffdshow does it all so why do i need more?

ffdshow would be my choice to, as recommended on these forums.

Used codec packs in the past (including K-Lite), and i'd agree they are bloatware and pointless when you could use something like VLC along with ffdshow and never have a need for a codec.

If you don't understand why people have a problem with codec packs then perhaps we should you leave you to it then.......
