Codecs issues

well thats a huge assumption isnt it? i dont care wether the pack is illegal because, and here's the important bit, i dont NEED it. ffdshow does it all so why do i need more?

When did I say you needed it?

Amen.

At the end of the day (like I said before) it's down to the end user to be honest it's down to a matter of opinion. Some people might find it easier or make full use of the tools, some people just plain hate it. It's kinda like Marmite but without the the nice taste (but we wont go into that!)

I feel like that this thread is going no where or is just going to turn into a flame war. They'll always be someone that disagrees and can usally back it up with a good enough reason.

Said my peace.

Clueless. I use a HTPC which lots of different video files and no need to install lots of codecs. FFDSHOW will have sorted out, most likely.

Stop giving out bad advice Tony.

People prefer different things get over it.

ROFL! I don't need to say anything more!

If you've a need for codec packs, it's because your setup/approach is essentially screwed. The codec pack is a relic of the past when there were hundreds of different formats flying around all vying for a place in your video encoder.

It's not necessary now, and technology has moved on from the days of hundreds of codecs. They're not needed anymore. If your system is in so much of a mess that you resort to essentially bunging a load of files onto it to resolve your playback issues, then you're attacking the problem in completely the wrong way.

Save for encoding itself, the codec is of very little use anymore.

//edit: WTF does that pack have decoders for DivX and XviD for? And then FFDShow on top of that? :\

I prefer to install one pack then install each player and encoder seperatley. Plus it covers the chance of ever coming accross an obscure file.

And by the way it doesn't install all that, you choose what to install at the installation wizard.

Good point it's all optional, you're not forced to install what you don't need and correct me if I am wrong but only all of the codecs get installed when you use FULL there are other options too. I have not installed it in a while so I might be a little rusty.

You didn't say anything, what does quoting the features list show?

If you can't figure it out for yourself...if you have any clue about HTPC/video setup's you'll realize 99% of these codecs aren't required. From that list I would need.

FFDShow
MPEG-2, using Theatretek and using TT as the player
FLAC encoder and directshow, only directshow because in Media Portal flac wasen't working. FLAC Works fine in Winamp without the FLAC filter though.
OGG encoder for my encodes.
Realtime Alternative

That's it! oh only need Quicktime Alternative for site browsing, I have no QT movies.

So if you choose 1 codec that steps on the toes of another, does it automatically deselect it?

For instance, if you decide to install the DivX decoder, does it stop you from installing the XviD one? It's not so bad if that's the case - otherwise it's just a quick fix for people that haven't got a clue what does what, so whack on a collection of dodgy material.

Yes but not everyone has the same uses as you, a lot aren't required but thats why it doesn't install them by default.

Divx and xvid are 2 different codecs so it doesn't stop that, it does however stop you installing multiple versions of the same codec and ones that will conflict or ones that are pointless to have when another codec that does the same thing is installed.

They are different codecs that do the same thing. You don't need XviD and DivX decoders, one always takes precedence over the other (usually DivX stamping on good ol' Xvid). So why does it let you install both?

Some divx certified devices such as dvd players and portable video players won't play xvid properly, thats one reason off the top of my head.

But that's encoding, not decoding.

Sorry to say mate, but as I said above, these threads really do sure you who to listen to for advice.

Xvid has some features that divx can't decode and xvid isnt compatible with all forms of divx. Hence both decoders.
