getting a new kitchen fitted and my missus says theres money in the budget for a coffee maker ( I have my classic stove top espresso maker but I am looking at something more convenient)

does anybody use the tassimo/nespresso makers or should I go for a more connventional espresso maker/steamer

budget up about 200 quid?

I like the idea of these combi machines that you use ground coffee and the ESE pods

anybody tried one?

i had a look on that thread but at 90+pages long I wasnt sure how long it would take to find people who were using the same sort of machines I want!

If you like good coffee avoid the pods. They're pretty rubbish.

The general suggestion is to get a Gaggia Classic (they were going for £130 new recently - have a look around online) and a decent burr grinder. I can't remember the name of the lowish-end grinders that people recommend but I'm sure someone will chime in with one soon.

Nespresso or go to Costa for a takeout.

I tried, I really did, but the gaggia, grinder, beans stuff just does my head in. Coffee shouldn't be difficult.

With a gaggia classic and a grinder you will be lucky to hit your budget (grinder is £150 +) plus it becomes more a hobby

The pod ones are fine if a little expensive per cup, or stretch to a bean to cup machine?

It's really not difficult for many. If you don't enjoy it that's fine but many of us on here love it.

There's an argument for going for something a little more convenient in terms of getting a bean to cup machine but that's pushing the budget a little for the OP.

I guess it depends on how much coffee he drinks. You can get manual grinders for ~£30 iirc that aren't too bad if you're just having single/double shots. It would be painful for group coffee making though, I guess.

But you can do better, and spend less by using a cafetier or an aeropress and a kettle.

Not only that but you can even take them to a music festival, seriously if you don't believe me go to Womad.

The Mrs insisted on a Nepresso machine to be put on the wedding list, and it's pretty good actually. Certainly better than I expected, and it is very convenient.

I used to think the same thing before I got the Classic. I started off with a hand grinder and an Aeropress and have used many other filter methods since. After warming up the Classic, it takes no longer to make a coffee with it than any other method. Cleaning it after every use is simple too.
