Hi,

I am looking to buy my mother a coffee machine for Christmas.

However:

I have a Classic Gaggia and I think for her it is just too messy/ time consuming/ will never get used. Can anyone offer up any alternatives? Preferably a bit better than a Braun Tassimo kind of thing?

Thanks

I have a Tassimo that has never been used since the novelty wore off. It makes a good coffee but there just isn't enough variety to choose from. I'm now looking for a decent coffee maker that can take grounds.

Have a look at an Aeropress - made by the people who used to do those frisby things years ago!

I'm very reliably informed that they make the best single cup of proper coffee!!!! (one of my customers sells those huge Italian coffee machines to businesses and he swears by this little gizmo!)

Coffee machines are like Wii's - used once and then forgotten about.

Not necessarily. Proper coffee and instant coffee taste quite different. It comes down to the question of which thing a person decides is more important - the better taste of proper coffee or the greater convenience of instant coffee.

I suppose cost is also a factor, but cheap ground coffee made in a £5 cafetierre isn't much more expensive than instant.

I use a Wii a couple of times a week, too. Our employer bought one for staff and it's good for a bit of a laugh in the lunch break.

Sorry to hijack thread but what's a decent but cheapish coffee grinder?

Make sure you get a burr rather than blade grinder, this is the bare minimum to grind coffee consistently. I have the Dualit coffee grinder which is relatively cheap for a burr grinder.

You can currently get a Gaggia Cubika for £99 from a the website of a high street electrical retailer.

If not, then you have a few choices.

Aeropress
Handpresso Domepod
Ceramic filter cone and swissgold filter
Chemex filter pot *very nice*
Cona Vac Pot *very funky*
Presso espresso machine *very odd thing*

Depends on how much you want to spend really.

Errr - Iberital MC2 doserless for £99?

eek anything reasonable around the £40-£50 mark. Or is it possible to get them 2nd hand.

There is a possibility to pick them up 2nd hand - but they don't drop in price that much. The problem with 2nd hand grinders is you never really know what condition they are in internally.

For about £60 there is the Bodum Antigua which isn't bad or the Starbucks Barista grinder *which is a rebadged Solis 166 and is pretty decent*

Under that - you're looking at hand grinders. The Hario Skerton/Skeleton/Skelton *depending on the site depends on what it's called* seems to be really popular at the moment. Or you could go for an old german Zass grinder.

Anybody any opinions on DeLonghi machines? Looking at an EC330S for ~£80 over the Gaggia Cubika for £99, as the latter doesn't have a frother.
