Coil Whine is a Problem for Everyone

If you want to convert me to the red army send me a 295X? :D lol. I did think about that actually when I was building (with those recent discounts). I was in the AMD and ATI camp for many years :3 my build from 2005 (Athlon 64) is still going actually. My parents use it ^_^ and the X1800 lasted quite a good few years before it died.

Anywayy. My 780Ti (reference) had quite loud coil whine but it was under my desk so didn't hear it as bad as I would have if it had been sat on top next to me. The whine happened during 3DMark and some menus (with high FPS). I can't say I have experienced any coil whine with 2 x MSI 970s. New PC though. New power supply (AX860).

Also I recently got 2 x reference 980s (don't ask) and nothing sound wise from them. So it seemed like the situation is definitely improved. A thing to note though is that I'm also using G-Sync and that probably stops those crazy high 1000fps on menus you get sometimes. Euro Truck Simulator 2 was awful for this. Made my 780 squeel badly.

On a random note; Euro Truck Simulator 2 fiiiiinally runs at Rock solid frame rates and is super smooth :D only took 6 cores and two graphics cards lol.

Similar experience for me. Had whine with a 600W Seasonic and once change to 1000w CM whine thankfully went away. I assumed the same as you and that it has something to do with the power or quality of power going into the system.

I'm going to try and burn in my card with some stress tests. I hope it gets better... Or I learn to live with it. I do have a lower end PSU so I know that might be the problem as well (Cxm 430m)

Either way I see what people are talking about now, and hopefully it becomes a thing of the past soon!

Unfortunately I haven't had time to test my 970 over the weekend and try to reduce the coil whine.

If burn in stress tests fail, I'm thinking of checking whether it is the power supply... I guess I have to buy a new one though, seems like Super Flower are the way to go? Can another make any other recommendations for coil whine issues?

I'm thinking if I sell my Corsair CXM 430M for about £20ish so at least that will offset the price of the new PSU!

EDIT: I see people mentioning 1000w PSUs but this seems complete overkill for me. I have an i5 2400 and a 970... so I'm not pulling a lot of power.
 
I got so fed up with coil whine that I bought myself a PS4 (and I hate Sony...) so it says it all...

I think that it is very disgusting that makers fool buyers selling cards trying to make profit over quality despite the price...

When you think that you can get a reasonably good 42" telly for £350, or a Game Console like the PS4, high end GPUs do look a bit pricey, and now look at CPU's, for a couple of inches of silicone; £250.

To confirm, the coilwhine bothers you ? but the hairdryer PS4 fan is acceptable ?
 
I get noticable coil whine with UE4 Elemental demo running, it's not really loud but i can notice it if i have the sound on low volume. The noise changes depending on scenes.

Has anyone actually had success to quieten it by running gpu intensive programs a while?

There must be some fix for it that nobody has found yet surely.
