Coil whine of 6800xt

It happens and can vary from unit to unit. My first 3090FE had absolutely mental coil whine that I could hear it from meters away. My replacement 3090FE with same PSU's was significantly better, aside from caveat HDMI 2.1 port on it was broken right out the gate so that has now also gone back :(

Can see that Hardware unboxed in there Q&A yesterday were asked about coil whine with reference to Hardware Cunucks 6800 review and mentioned they did not have coil whine on there 6800 or 6800XT units.

So yeah sadly I think it will be a lottery (after playing the lottery of getting a card!) in terms of coil whine variation on these cards.

As someone else suggested could try using it a bit before sending it back. With my first FE using it a fair bit did seem to reduce whine slightly, though will confess, may have been partly placebo at that point tuning it out. My replacement right out the gate without any burning in was quieter.

I can confirm, coil whine did not get noticeably better with time (13 days). I had to return mine, as replacement was not an option due to no stock. I just wonder what is the split between quiet and noisy 6800XTs, I would guess about 1/4 - 1/5 suffer from coil whine. I even read some 6800 non-XT have coil whine.

Leave it running on the Unigine Valley menu screen after you launch the benchmark and click exit > okay. Leave it running for 24-48 hours. Tamed many a squealer with this trick. :D

This! Had to do this with a couple of old AMD 7950's, benched deb bitches for a day and everything was fine after a while.

I let my brother have my 3080 FE because it had really awful coil whine. He doesn't care, but I do and you're right to return it IMO. I just can't stand it at all, whereas fan noise doesn't bother me. The 3070 FE I'm using now is absolutely silent, which makes it a rare beast in my experience. I've owned a lot of cards and a significant majority of them have had coil whine to some degree (the buzzing kind being much more common than the squealing kind), though the degree varies heavily. I think the 3080 FE might have actually been the worst of the lot, just ahead of an R9 Fury Nitro and a Vega 64 reference card.

I think that even my silent coil whine wise 3060ti makes a noise on exit screen of Heaven or Valley....good tip, I might try it in the future when I encounter another whiny card.
