So i finally got my 970 and it has the dreaded coilwhine :/ even with vsync i get coilwhine....

Rome 2 benchmark goes crazy and its only getting around 108 average 180 max but the whine is bad! With vsync it gets better but not by much. Menu fps of 700 and it screams!

As soon as i alt tab it stops and its coming from the card not the psu as i read sometimes its the psu?

Ive had a few cards in this PC, 670, 770 and now 970. The 970 is the only card thats done this.

I was dreading this! Apart from the coilwhine the card is ok, idles at 45c as the fans dont spin up but maxes out at 75c which seems a bit high?

Its the Evga SC the box was all sealed but card was just sitting in a plastic container. Asus packaging is much better. Not sure to try another Evga or a different brand? Im sending it back for sure this is crazy!

The packaging has nothing to do with coil whine.
There is a trick for fixing coil whine and that is to put some varnish on components (capacitors i think).

shouldnt have to do that on a new card though...
can you not RMA it?
i tried to put up with mine, but got fed up with it so flogged it.
the person who had it off me wasnt that bothered about it, so neither was i when i sold it to them :)

try running heaven on a loop for few hours,it might quieten down

it soundlike your torturing a pig:eek:

If i alt tab the sound is gone it only makes this sound in games. Even with vsync its noisy :/ never had coilwhine ever until now. There really is a problem with these 970s.

Runs games fine though nice and fluid so far but the sound is horrible!! I can even hear it coming through my headset!

Why cant things be simple? :/

Hi there

The Galax Infinity cards are due tomorrow with my coil whine reduction technology and were also guaranteeing them to be coil whine free were that confident and if you do experience it we will swap them out.

But so far our first coil whine reduction card has being a huge success with not one card returned for coil whine issues, most people have to push them to 1500-2000fps to make them whine which is well not typical usage.

GALAX GeForce GTX 970 OC Silent "Infinity Black Edition" 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **WorldWide Exclusive** @ £299.99 inc VAT

GX-010-GX_400.jpg

Since Overclockers UK introduced our Infinity system range, demand for high performance zero compromise systems has exploded. Our Infinity brand represents performance hardware coupled with a unique and stylish aesthetic.

Since the release of high end Maxwell architecture, the hardware game has changed. The new GeForce cards offer revolutionary new technologies and class leading performance alongside low operating temperatures and impressive power consumption.

The GALAX GeForce GTX 970 OC Silent "Infinity Black Edition" is a collaboration of one of the largest Nvidia board partners worldwide, Overclockers UK Graphics Specialist: Andrew Gibson and Overclockers UK Technical Specialist & Overclocking World Champion, Ian ‘8Pack’ Parry.

Originally the Galax 970 EX OC Black Edition was intended as a high performance option for customers looking for the ultimate gaming experience with class leading performance. Our close partnership with Galax allowed us to specify a list of important modifications that would make the GALAX GeForce GTX 970 OC Silent "Infinity Black Edition" a real show stopper.

Primarily, to fit the Infinity aesthetic, we demanded that the external design of our Black Edition card was sleek and stealthy. Adding to the already imposing look of the Galax design, this new, aggressive appearance really highlights the intent behind this product.

Additionally to the colour change, we included a nickel plated I/O plate, heatsink and heatpipes to compliment the premium nature of the product. The already impressive backplate on the card has been accented with a stylish "Infinity: Inspired by 8 Pack" decal.
The imposing looks of the card would be nothing without the ‘go’ to back up all the show.

Building on the already impressive performance of the GTX 970 platform, world class overclocking expertise from 8Pack has been implemented to fine tune the BIOS of this card to achieve maximum safe, reliable performance from the GTX 970.

As an industry leading gaming and high end hardware specialist, Overclockers UK understands the importance of offering a product that meets a customer’s expectation. A major worry for any enthusiast is operational noise under load. We have used this knowledge to reduce coil whine by using higher quality components and also using glue to attach the inductors to the PCB to help reduce electrical vibrations which help reduce whine.

This collaboration with Galax has allowed us to build what we believe to be the finest example of a GTX 970 on the market today.

This product is exclusively available from Overclockers UK and Caseking group throughout UK and Europe. We suggest European customers visit www.caseking.de to purchase this card in Western Europe and Eastern European customers purchase from http://www.kellytech.hu/

For info my Galax GTX970 exoc black edition has minimal coil whine. the ONLY time I've heard it was when I benched 3dmark 2002 (I think thats the one, real oldie) and when the frames hit over 600-700 I could here a quiet sorta "stuck pig" sound, almost like a warble, but it was very quiet and, like I said, thats the only time I've heard anything like that.

You shouldn't have to buy a marked up "special" card to get one without coil whine.

Tell that to every manufacturer then......

It is quite rare on the grand scheme of things, but there are ways to reduce and try to eliminate it, yes it means spending more money on components, but it is possible.

Just unfortunately most manufacturers just see the $$$ signs and look to reduce cost of manufacturing to maximise profits.

I was so scared of coil whine after having a few 780's that did it. I purchased the PCS 290 because powercolor put some kind of clue on the capacitors to prevent coil whine.

If you get intrusive whine (in game) and you have a decent PSU, then RMA the card back until you get a decent one. That's the only way manufacturers are going to listen. Scratch that, they already know it's a problem, they just don't want to fix it.

No, that's more your job. You're effectively buying sub par products and then selling them to your customers and then marketing a card as special because it performs to what should be the bare minimum standard.

It's not your fault. You are a business after all but you're still implicitly encouraging this. Perhaps it's just me but I find it extremely poor form on all parties from nVidia, to the partners and to the shops. It's a circle of neglect and looking the other way in the name of profit. And frankly it stinks.

We have absolutely zero impact on Asus, Gigabyte or MSI, they are far to big and know best, we scream at them on a weekly basis. The only big brand card we had influence on was MSI Lightning as it was a focused project which required 8 Packs excellence.

We are doing our best and we are doing far more than any other Etailor.

Show me one other Etailor worldwide who has gone out of there way? Wait there is not one ONLY OcUK, we are the ones pushing and trying to be different.

That is why there is an OcUK reference 970 and a Galax Infinity, we had to seek out manufacturers to do this for us who had a realistic MOQ to make it happen which was still several thousand units even then.

So sorry but we are actively pushing like crazy and are the only ones doing so, no one else is! But as a business we are not about to stop selling every graphics card barr the Powercolor PCS+ and our own OcUK 970 and Galax Infinity, that would be completely dumb and stupid which would result in loosing us millions in turnover!

Im getting coilwhine as soon as i open the game up... 60 fps with vsync still whining!

When i disable vsync it obv gets worse, i dont use vsync on every game either. Rome 2 one of my most played games has horrible whine!

I paid 252 in the sale i dont wanna pay 300+ with 1 year less warranty just so i dont get coilwhine! Ive never had coilwhine before something is up with these 970s.

I just want a coilwhine free one.
