Two things give me them.
Ice cubes and Salt. Moreso the Ice cubes, and if I even try to drink from a frozen glass, I will get them within 3 hours. Ice cream bars and drinks that are too cold are the next most common thing that gives me them. I carry Zovirax with me everywhere (but it doesn't work very well for me even in the tingling stages) - The most common place I get one is right in the middle of my top lip. I would always get one on holiday, due to the Salt in the sea and the cold drinks/Ice creams. Now I never get any, due to me using straws for drinks and keeping the seawater away from my lips.
Some other things to consider.
Your diet plays a massive part in you getting them (and many substances promote them forming) - most notably any foods that contain the Amino Arginine, which apparently helps the Virus multiply. That would include cola, chocolate, peanuts and cashews, gelatin, beer and peas. And I always find I get a cold sore after eating loads of peanuts (probably due to the Arginine and salt)
Another thing I should point out is - in the general public, they come and go in phases. If you start seeing people with them, its usually one of the cyclic phases (and you can bet you will get one in the next few days or weeks - simply becuase the virus is live on phone handsets, cups, glasses etc that are shared in workplaces) - Usually you will see dozens of people with them at certain times of the year. And, for me, stress/colds or flu has nothing to do with me getting them. In fact I usually get them when I'm at my peak fitness and have never got them during stressful periods, or times when I was run-down.
You can also get anti-viral tablets if they really annoy you or leave scars. The only thing that reduces their occurance in me is watching what I put near my lips, and daily doses of Zinc. Before I started watching the cold stuff, Ice cubes and salt, I used to get about 6 a year. Now I usually get 2.
