Colleagues knowing your pay

OP: You have a very cute cat so all previous/future disagreements are nullified.

;)

Your sig is a little troubling though.

I know, sorry Ewaf but your comment was unnecessary :o

I find myself not visiting GD any more, because the petty things boil my blood, such as this or someone crying that their neighbour put a bin bag in their wheelie bin.

I dunno, maybe I'm just being harsh, but lifes too short to worry about such pathetic things, let alone spend the time to post it on an internet forum. Here is a grip, go get it!

tl;dr don't worry about pathetic things

Ah I used to feel exactly the same - I don't let it worry me now.

It's still worthwhile looking in on this forum now and then - it can really make you smile sometimes.
Just dip in and out as the mood takes you. Don't get bullied by the high ranking posters (going 'lol' to everyone else's posts is shameful and doesn't count).

Above all, don't take it too seriously and you'll enjoy it more.

Opening a payslip is out of order as it should be a private & confidential.

Finding out about pay doesn't bother me, lots of people have a rough idea how much I earn, and because I have a company car can work out the benefit I get too.

I don't go round telling people what I earn, and don't want to share what I earn as it's irrelevant.

It's not discussed openly at my work but doesn't bother me too much if between friends. If you are paid less than someone else, do something about it. If you get paid more, then no problem.

My job is to pay everybody so I know exactly what they are on, I'm on the least for some reason :)

You should do something about that,

doesn't seem fair...

Unless the people you are paying are skilled / moderately skilled/ highly skilled...

Forgive me but you sound like a tool (can't use naughty words).

I don't mind but i definately don't advertise it. Only yesterday a colleague and good friend asked me what I was on. He is trying to negotiate for more and wanted to know how much higher he could possibly go. He didn't ask before even though we have worked closely for years. I want him to have more money and to push for more money.

Companies don't want you to share pay information because it invaiably leads to resentment and people asking for more money or leaving.

My best friend doesn't even know my pay. If he did, he'd be gutted as its probably what he earns in two years

/self bragg, I went there :p

In private sector it's more likely they'll be disparities in similar employee's pay so it's more sensitive, in public secotr you're banded and it's paid depending on band/duties you do, so much more transparent. I am not bovvered if people know my pay these days, it was a lot more secretive in the private sector.

Opening someone elses payslip out of curiosity shouldn't be done and pretty sure its written into my contract as a disciplinary offence.

Can't say it bothers me if other people know my salary and I know some of my colleagues incidentally, I would feel a little miffed it someone was being nosey and opened payslips, letters, etc. addressed to me tho.

I am in the Private sector and there is a thin line to an disciplinary, when talking about pay. But I can understand why some are miffed, especially as were all doing the same job, you feel we should all be on the same wage.

True bro. Anger is subsiding to just a minor lingering grudge :)

Here is my cat as a thank you to all:

the cat is a god. sell me it, i must have it

The problem with everyone keeping their pay a secret is that sometimes it means you might be getting paid less than you should be, without really knowing it.

It's something that actually plays into the hands of the employer, more than the employee. For example, if you knew that your co-workers in the same role were getting paid more than you, it would be a great bargaining tool for a raise.

This. AT my work it would cause chaos as people would found out that other people doing the same job got more just cause they were a better negotiator at payrise time or when they started. Equality would then have to happen.

at my work its not a case of being a good negotiator, our boss always looks to not give pay rises..... I got a new job title this year:mad:

I know everyone's pay as I work in HR and use the payroll database all day every day.

However if I was to start going round saying "Man, can you believe XXX earns £YYYYY!!!" I'd be in deep trouble.

It all falls under Data Protection and FOI and what not.

Now on the other hand, if I went and said "Man, my wage sucks, i've been here 10 years and i'm only on £YYYYY..." then that's no problem, that's info about me and if I want to share it I can.

But people shouldn't be discussing others salaries without permission from the person they are talking about really. Common curtsy more than anything.
