Well, The network does.

I'm just curious to see if other colleges/where ever you guys work have better/similarsystems.

AFK I can tell we have a suse/novell/windows system going on...

When you enroll you get a u/n & p/w and you can use that to log on to any computer on the campus, so it's obviously running some sort of domain.

But when you turn the pc's on it looks like they are set to boot from a network image and suse linux loads up loads an image and then loads windows 2000. I assume this is so you if you delete any files on a single pc it doesnt matter as the drive is wiped and the image loaded again on reboot. Anyone know how much bandwidth this takes up? I guess it's like 1gig per image, it takes about 5 minutes from bootup to logon.

Anyway you can use the same u/n and password to check your groupwise email (I guess this is novells version of exchange?) And you can check your groupwise online too, You can also use novell netstorage to access your remote storage! And it also is tuned in to http://moodle.org/ !

I havent had a chance to chat to one of the it support people yet but it seems to be a really cool system.

I also think the staff have some sort of voip voicemail.

So is this sort of setup normal in todays colleges/workplaces?

ps I still need a bag.

um.. i believe this has been the setup for many years

ps. wtf.. 300 posts and no avatar??? whyyyy :(

you have to set it manualy.

Dont bother though, most ava's suck.

Yes quite normal, I used to work as a Tech at the Leeds met uni, and while the username/password thing wasnt quite as nice as that, we dide used to re-image the machines accross the network every night.

Also with access to the super-janet network it made downloading huge files sweet!

The network at my new college also seems pretty good. The PC's are all custom build, are not full of crap and are actually surprisingly fast! 3.2 P4's with 1GB RAM. Cant be bad when there are hundreds of them at this place.

The only downside is that all the systems run Win2k Pro and they could easily run XP.

win2k pro > win xp

Yes, our college has a similar set-up. We also have a thing called "Blackboard" which by the looks of it would give you a hard-one. The PC's we need to use as IT students though are quite poor.

By the way dude, just go buy a bag!

Sounds just like my uni network, nothing special really mate :p

My uni also uses blackboard to a certain extent, it's invaluable for getting lecture slides/tutorial tasks at a later date (if you happen to fall asleep while the lecturer waffles on.....)

Yeah it's really handy. I've taken days off college before, done the work I would have done there and just sent it to my lecturer through blackboard. Saves the trek to college :D

That blackboard looks like a watered down moodle.

Also it's racist, Kids now-a-days refer to them as "Wipe-boards"

...

Seriously.

How is describing something as black racist? Isn't that racist in itself?

Oh and whiteboards i suppose are fine :)
