.com, .co.uk or?

I wish I got the .com as well when I got my .co.uk. A US hosting company is sitting on the .com now and will sell it for $2,895...

Maybe when I'm big news I'll get it, small fry fundage can't justify that kind of £demand :o

IMHO:

  • .com = US Business
  • .co.uk = UK Business
  • .net = Village/Community
  • .org = US Charity
  • .org.uk = UK Charity
  • .other = Don't care.

That's not really your opinion, it's more their actual intended purpose! Lol.

It's become rather meaningless now that most are available for anyone to buy.

Both, ie - Don't buy a .co.uk if the .com is already owned. Also buy .net if possible.

Reason for this is people will often target you to steal traffic via search engines, or potential traffic may end up in the wrong place through mistyping.

Why .net?

.com if selling internationally, .co.uk if your primary audience is here imo.

Agreed! Backed up by Nominet report.

.com is global, .us for US

I can get .com and co.uk from Fasthost for just over £60 for 5 years, and domain privacy for £2.99 (first year, then £4.99)
.uk is around £35 for 5 years, but I can see the advantage of that one, as when I google something I usually put the subject matter and 'uk' in the search bar.
As I suspect that the vast majority of business would be here, this seems to be the best option.

Although 123-Reg do charge £9.99+VAT for changing the IPS Tag for a .uk based domain, they are more often than not willing to waive that fee if you ask them.

Of course, everybody has horror stories to tell, on a daily basis I hear people complaining about 123-reg, fasthosts, godaddy, 1&1, every-bodies experience is different.

I avoid companies that hide their WHOIS info. Also it is against Nominet terms for businesses to hide WHOIS on *.uk domains, only private individuals can.

I have used 123reg for 12 years now, never had a problem with them, have a couple of domains with them.

The Who is OptOut is for non trading individuals, if your trading and have a business you shouldn't be opting out of Whois information.

Indeed, Nominet have been checking up on registrant data quality over the past year. I've seen them ask for company documentation to provide business name, company number etc. If not provided, the domain is suspended.

Anyone know how easy it is to change the use from personal to business of a domain? Can I buy now and change the use later when I am ready to start the business?
