Are they a rip off or what?
Back in the 50s/60s/70s/80s they camere with a free gift every so oftetn and not again and cost lest than a quid. but now thye come with more that one free gift every issue and cost at least three quid and the yoys and stickers usually cost less than the price of that to produce.
I said to a customer this after noon that I'm sure the kids're more interested in the toy than the actual comic.

£1 in 1980 is £4.50 today. £1 in 1970 is £16 today.

If the toys cost more than the price they wouldn't be in business.

I remember when the beano was something like 25p (often with a free chewy bar or something worth ~5-10p*, then Oink! came out for 70p with a flexible pink record

As Raikiri says people forget how much money has devalued, and how often the free gifts were promotions so the cost to the comic to provide them was minimal, if not actually a profit to them (as the advertisers would likely have supplied them at a massive discount or free and it increased comic sales meaning they could charge more for other adverts).

Reminds me of the Beano comics I used to buy in the 90s. I remember them costing 50p and would buy the new one each week after school. I remember having stacks of them in a cupboard. No idea what my nan did with them now...

I can't remember exactly when i bought these, but at £1.99 i didn't begrudge the cost.
I do wish i'd kept all my old Viz comics though.

I'm not too keen on Superman, Spiderman, ETC. I prefer the likes of Conan The Barbarian, Judge Dredd, Slaine, Rogue Trooper, Strontium Dog and Nemesis The Warlock.

Old 2000ad stories hold up surprisingly well. I re-read a stack of very old issues recently.

Have you seen the Strontium Dog fan film? It's excellent- really captures the spirit of the comic:

They very rarely had a gift it was a notable event when it did and it wasn't much as a rule usually some plastic thing that didn't last long.

I remember when the beano was something like 25p

I remember when they were 2p. Shocking inflation!

I do wish i'd kept all my old Viz comics though.

I had a whole stack of early 2000AD comics including the first issue, mother threw the whole lot out at some stage. Probably worth a bit now.

I used to read a comic called Jackpot as a child. I even had every edition at one point, including the crimbo albums. They merged with Buster and many other comics starting merging together. They computer games came out and comics seemed to slow right down. We used to have so many different comics to choose from back in the 70's and 80's.

It is a shame that when both my parents died almost together, that I had to leave my childhood home at a young age and lost an awful lot of my stuff, all my comics and Lego included.

Was never a big fan of comic books, I was given them occasionally but was more bothered with the sweets or whatever else came with it.

I read a book about British comics that said the mergers were a business strategy.

They'd launch a comic and, when sales began to flag, merge it with another. The hope was readers would then transfer to an existing title.

I remember being very annoyed when Starlord merged with 2000ad, which had very poor paper quality in comparison and just didn't look as good. Strontium Dog and Robusters (which became ABC Wsrriors) started out in Starlord.
