The trouble is that after Generals, C+C effectively turned into an arcade game that looks like a RTS.
On red alert 3, enemy planes take -- what -- 4 seconds from taking off in their base, to bombing your base. One bombing run can destroy your most important building -- the whole operation taking 6 seconds. So you end up actually 'twitch' ordering units around rather then taking time to think of the best response to the threat. Just send anything against the enemy, because if you spend 1.5 seconds choosing a unit -- it's too late.
It seems to actively encourage 'speed clicking' a standard setup of base. Basically the thing is just so fast and intense - but if I want to twitch I'll load Quake 3 not a RTS.
I much prefer RTS games where I get to pause, sip my coffee, think, and make strategic decisions. Where I can think 'I'm going to protect the West Entrance to my base with these 4 units so I can counter attack later and -- whoa -- I've had a good idea for a strategy I'll attempt'
In modern C+C you can not think for more then 2 seconds without clicking because you'll be destroyed. Just 'Build anything .. place it anywhere .. Oh, something has been destroyed. Well, who cares I'll build another one in 4 seconds -- and who cares where it's placed you haven't got time to decide just GOGOGOGOGO build any old units, throw at the enemy 'bar-room brawl' style - straight into the front door as you haven't got time to plan any attack beyond 'Just charge straight in', then build a load more of any old unit, then throw them into the mess - straight into the front door. And no, you don't have time to even actually watch the battle as you need to build more -- just go back to your own base and start building the next wave of any old effectively suicide units ready to lump into the enemy willy-nilly'. And yes, if you do anything else more 'cunning' - you just lose to his 'lump any old unit into the front door' strategy ...
Hardly fun.
