Recently reinstalled this and playing via the "First Decade" compilation pack and 1.03 patch. Hugely enjoying myself and currently about half way through the NOD campaign. However is it just me, or did Westwood code the AI with a huge unfair advantage even cheating when it comes to resources and production? On at least a couple of levels now I've either captured or destroyed the enemy construction yard and tiberium refinery. However despite this supposedly starving the opposition of cash the AI continues to churn out vehicles and troops from the respective structures until these too are captured and/or destroyed.

I therefore don't feel much hestitation in using the old sandbag ploy to either "box in" their base or in later levels move defense platforms closer. I know it's a bit of an exploit which of course was no longer available in Red Alert but it kind of redresses the balance.

I'm also finding enemy grenadiers far more accurate and lethal than I remember!

Still a great game to play through again - it's probably 15 years or so since I last played the original and it's fantastic getting it working on Win 7, the only artefacts being the video playback having some distortion and instant scrolling of the map preventing fine positioning.

It's brutally hard from what I remember and yes, "balancing" was to basically allow the AI to have lots of resources.

Try the Covert Ops pack, those were even harder. :D

To sort out the completely screwed colours I experienced in Windows 7, I right clicked on my desktop and clicked on 'Screen Resolution'. Leaving that window open makes my games run fine. I have no idea why, but it works for me!

C&C is an epic game, way ahead of the times imo and without a doubt a challenge. I always install the TFD 103 rev4 patch which fixes a lot of bugs.
I am playing it at the moment. **** me the soundtrack is nostalgically awesome.

Ahh the ole sandbag trick - also selling towers and cancelling it to get money and troops was a thing if I remember right.

Loved the original and the first Red Alert - Countless hours.

Also a side not had and played Dune also - The good ole days were great.

I take it you mean Dune 2000 as the base building one? Which was awesome, however, I did prefer the original Dune game myself :)

C&C is great, tried replaying the original recently but couldn't get back in to it but RA2 is constantly on my PC just in case I fancy a blast on it :)

Red Alert 2!!

yup, I played through red alert 2 countless times. Think I'm going to install the first decade again. I thought the only patch for first decade was 1.02?

what does 1.03 add? also has anyone tried emperor battle for dune on windows 7?

I'm playing through RA2 at the moment (I've just finished the Allied campaign). Soviets next, then Yuri's revenge :D

My First Decade disc is fubar'd though, so I'm having to pull random ISOs down to install from with my legitimate key :(

It's just a pity they haven't updated them to run on Win 8, I've got Win 7 running in a VM just so I can play them all :D

bah I wana play now! xD loved Red Alert and Tiberian Sun :D (when I eventurally got TS to work on my pc at least... silly directx cd-rom drivers?! o.O lol)

one of my favorite missions to this day was on RA as the soviets, it was the mission that was on the demo. simple eliminate enemies in the area, you started SW and they were NE with a river running down the middle of the map. they would sen troops but like maybe 2 guys and a dog at a time :p so you could chill and build a base xD

used to build a defense net out of flametowers and wire fence, then about 7 runways... then all out attack with yaks and about 50 grenadiers.yeah the grenadiers were insane!! get a small group and in a few volleys of nades they could take down buildings xD sucked if one dies though.... the dude would explode and take out most of your nearby troops xD risk vs reward I guess xD

so I have the codes for RA and TS about (TS I know as I saw the cd case the other day). will it be much ball ache getting it to work on w8.1? patches for the normal standalone games? or they just patched out the boxed multipacks?

OP kills my memorable thoughts about the game instantly by reminding me how olde I am :( :o

ROFLOL.

I used the 1.03 patch as it was the only one I could find on what appeared to be a reputable site. The main thing it adds (AFAIK) is higher resolution graphics which in itself is a bit of a cheat as it means on the smaller maps you don't need a comms tower for a map overview.

Managed to slog through onto NOD 9 - very tough start where you have to try and get the commando, engineers and rocket troops down the map to the derelict base. If you succeed almost immediately under attack with no time to build troops or a weapon depot.
