Command & Conquer (Original)

I remember reading an article ages ago that claimed that all the ai did essentially was cheat and could have its harvesters attack yours when you weren't looking at those specific areas and that kind of thing.

The first game did come out 19 years ago, RTS AI wasn't particularly advanced in 1995 :p

That said, the original red alert was so insanely unbalanced. C&C too to an extent given how things like the NOD vehicle factory worked. You could just set up a small base to the east of it with a few sams and just shoot down all of his vehicles as they got flown in, IIRC. Or even do it with bazooka infantry.

Also, check out Open RA, currently has the base game and RA working in a new, improved and modern engine!

I loved proper old school manuals with all the units listed, reading that was half the fun of a new game!

Well NOD 9 has me stumped at the moment. Got the commando, one surviving engineer and the bazooka guys down to the old base, but it all gets wiped out in a relentless ground, air and sea (gunboat) assault. I can't think of any other way to approach this as the issue is you simply can't build up your defences quickly enough to stem the tide. NOD was always about weight of numbers rather than heavy units but if you can't build your force up to counter the initial attack - we're doomed!

Switching to the GDI campaign for now to see how far I get with that.

Red Alert 2 yuris revenge!!

Fixed, used to love rushing online with an army if the personal type carries where the men inside could shoot, always British for the sniper.
So carrier, chrono man to freeze one enemy per vehicle, a sniper for enemy army and the rest just rocket launchers.
Takes ages to build up, but as long as you survive early on, it was such a stupidly powerful combo.

:( I can't find red alert 2 or yuris revenge add on, on any of the digital shops. Steam, green man gaming, gog.

Anyone know any others or if it's available at all. I need some yuris revenge action.

I would just nip to GAME and get a copy of The First Decade. :)

Not ideal but it's all (sort of, with the unofficial patch) ready to go and working nicely. I downloaded a new Dxdraw renderer to remove all the fast scrolling/garbled colour issues and it runs beautifully.

[Edit] This one: http://hifi.iki.fi/cnc-ddraw/#download

Then edit the ddraw.ini it creates to set fullscreen, vsync, etc. and it works well.

OpenRA is a Libre/Free Real Time Strategy project that recreates the classic Command & Conquer titles.

We include recreations of C&C (Tiberian Dawn), C&C: Red Alert, and Dune 2000. These are not intended to be perfect copies, but instead combine the classic gameplay of the originals with modern improvements such as unit veterancy and the fog of war.

OpenRA's primary focus is cross-platform multiplayer between Windows, OS X, and Linux; however, we include a number of single-player missions, and also support skirmish games against AI bots.

I take it you mean Dune 2000 as the base building one? Which was awesome, however, I did prefer the original Dune game myself :)

C&C is great, tried replaying the original recently but couldn't get back in to it but RA2 is constantly on my PC just in case I fancy a blast on it :)

Dune was an adventure game, Dune II was the first Westwood strategy game. Epically good in it's day, must be 20 years old now?

You can buy the ultimate collection from Origin which contains all(?) the games -
https://www.origin.com/en-gb/store/buy/c-c-the-ultimate-collection-ANW.html#details

I've found that it's usually cheaper if you buy a key via Amazon.com (US site) and redeem that in Origin.

LOL, I use an external DVD drive that I only bring out to install games. :p

The problem with OpenRA is that it mucks around with the tech trees. Why? Red Alert may not be perfect in terms of balance but it is what it is and should be left un-fiddled.
