Community Fibre

Hats off to CF, I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure a way out around CGNAT despite loads of guides (almost all of which make big jumps/assumptions or life throws curve balls at me).

Rang them after someone on Emby Community suggested trying (didn't think to as non-CGNAT is offered on their 3GB and business accounts). They changed me back to a dynamic IP. Now I need to figure out SSL for my Emby server, happy result though :).

They should do this really as probably only a small portion of their users would even know what cgnat is.

What exactly did you say?

I just rang them up and explained at the old house I could have friends and family access my media server and despite many workarounds, it just wasn't working with CGNAT.

He said it shouldn't be a problem but he needs to run by the tech team, 30 mins after the call our internet dropped which I presumed was the switch over. A little while later he rang back to confirm it had been changed back.

Reckoned they would switch over to IPV6 in about 2 years time. My Emby server still isn't working but that's because I haven't done SSL with Caddy and Cloudflare properly yet :p.

This is now available at my house. It’s tempting but £25 for 1GB seems almost too good to be true
It's also +£2 after your contract is up (not including any anual increases that may impact it), so £27 (check if that's correct for any new package you get though, as some are not that). It's a very good deal considering most 1gb lines are £40-50 or more.

Contact them via twitter and ask what's up. Only way I got an answer which turned out to be accurate was via twitter. On the phone or email they were useless about it.
Their response. So much light was shed...

After checking the address, I can confirm that we are halfway through the completion of our works however we are awiating any sign offs to be completed before we can move to the next stages. Please register your interest on our website if you havent done so already. Kind regards, Morgan

Edit. Virgin runs out in mid Feb so I hope they pull their finger out by then.

Reply back quoting him and say FTFY.

In the end though, even if they give you a date or not, it likely won't change the actual live date. Does help knowing though. For me it was important as I was using mobile data which was fine for browsing but the downloading was bloody slow. Only so long one can go on like that. If they said it was going to be 12 months I would have made other arrangements.

A rare instance of it essentially isn't too good to be true. I've had more downtimes than Virgin but still few across the >1 year I've been with them. And their CS teams are much better than when I started. 1GB up and down is insane especially at this price.

Community Fibre run a very good service, it's cheap because London gets them hundreds of customers covered by building down a single street.

Almost certainly but the likes of Virgin were wanting £60pm if we carried on vs cancelling and starting a new contract. Sub £30pm for 1GB right now is hard to ignore. And if it gets to silly prices, there will hopefully be more fibre providers and choices to jump ship.

And it uses the standard fibre cables laid in the street that the likes of bt, sky etc can use.

Virgin uses there own cables laid on the ground and for many years, they had no competition.

Before community fibre I had hyperopic which was yes double the price of community fibre but still way cheaper than Virgin as Virgin diddnt have 1gb at the time and there current 1gb offers are only for download speeds whilst hyperopic, community fibre etc have 1gh download and upload!

It's their own infrastructure, so completely separate from Openreach. They are however allowed to use the same ducts and poles that already exist, but the cables are their own. They still do dig up roads if needed, was the case for the end of my road since there were no ducts there.

Ahh right ok but they never could do so without open reach first I think.

That's the same for the vast majority of altnets, the expensive bit has always been digging up roads, the fibre cable and splitters are dirt cheap in comparison. There are some providers who dig their own network even where Openreach exist - like Cityfibre - but that is because they want full ownership of their network and see themselves as the third national fibre network after Openreach and Virgin. Companies like Netomnia retailing a service through YouFibre for £19.99 couldn't afford to do that if they were doing a huge civils programme at the same time - it managed to bankrupt all the cable companies when they tried.

I did something similar.
But now I am spooked by how specific my IP address geolocation is!

I'm on a wired location from a workstation, so it is definitely not using WiFi or other data.
It used to just say London, or show Charing Cross for the central of London, now it is within 1/2 a mile!

Other stuff with Wi-Fi and a GPS radio in will have connected to that network and used a service that uses geolocation though

Sure, but that is no different to other ISPs I've used and never seen it that specific.
Did you try your IP, how specific was the location?

Mine is no where near my address, still within London (since CF only serves here), but it's like zone 2 area of London.

Another thing to note, if you're under CGNAT, the IP is shared with other users, who could also be spread around London. So it could be just a coincidence it's close to your actual address.
