Commuter towns to London

I was going to suggest Leamington Spa and Solihull but the Chiltern line seems to have slowed down loads for some reason. I'm sure you used to be able to get a train from Solihull that was little over an hour to Marylebone in the morning. If you're not doing a daily commute, then I'd look at Leamington Spa seriously. It's delightful.

Birmingham is great, but I don't think I'd fancy the daily commute to Euston. The travel either side in Brum and London wouldn't be good either.

Which will get you into London 12mins quicker than the current line

They will probably scrap the current line to justify it. Also anyone from Birmingham who is commuting to a job in central London is likely going to be moving out of Birmingham asap lol

Wickford, Basildon, Billericay - all have electrification lines with very reliable lines, especially the Southend Victoria line, even during strikes Greater Abelio run a full service during your class office working hours.

How often do you need to commute?
Because I'd say if you're bothering to move out, don't go to the still expensive half way places.

E.g if on the SW Waterloo line, you could live in Woking or Basingstoke. Both arguably as good (or rather not) as each other. But the price of a 3 bed semi in Woking would probably get you a 4 bed detached in Basingstoke, for the price of...maybe an extra 30mins/day sitting on a train?

Basingstoke and Woking are easy into SW, Clapham Junction and so most of SW and Waterloo so the City. But they’re horrible to live in, Woking a bit better now but Baso is rank

Amersham is a bit of a life hack for commuting. Bang in the middle of the Chiltern countryside but you get the much cheaper TFL fares because its in the zones as the Met line terminates there, but you can also use the faster Chiltern mainline to get into Marylbone for the same price. From next year it will be even better value for money as day travelcards are being scrapped for surrounding non-London stations.

It's also a very nice town

Reading is at the end of Crossrail, plus the fast train is only 20 minutes from Paddington. Or you can get on Crossrail and get off at Ealing Broadway and get on the District.

Quite a lot of Reading is a bit rubbish though, but Caversham is nice.

Many expensive Southeast places have been mentioned already, Farnham, Guildford, Winchester is another.

Woking has turned into a place of high-rise flats. I lived there for a few months, never got on; whilst the commute was easy - I just never warmed to the place.

Farnborough has vastly improved over the years; you can see they are investing.

Village life and happy to drive to a station, and deep pockets? My choice, Pirbright (get the train at Brookwood) or New Aylesford.

We live in Woking, it's probably the easiest place to commute from as there are so many trains and it can take as little as 25 minutes to get to Waterloo.

Pirbright is very nice but expensive, as are any of the areas around Woking like that and you add travel time on.

Guildford is a nicer town than Woking, but the trains aren't as good.

It all really depends on your budget, a 3 bed semi is going to set you back £400k ish for Woking, more for the nicer parts or if you want to be within walking distance of the station.
