hey guys got a college assingment on this just want your views really on linux and why it is/isnt better than windows, i dont know anything about it really so im in the deep end as i dont have a copy either.

cheers

Linux is better for more specialist jobs where as windows is very good for the home user. It depends upon who will be needing it and for what function. The good thing about Linux is its open source which means you can adapt it how ever you want.

The article Billy linked to is a very good source of information, but don't just rip it off. You should find other sources on the t'interwebs. That way you get a better overall view and can then write it in your own words.

Some differences/similarities to look at are:

Users [How each handles different users]
Security
Performance
Price
Support [As in tech support]
Software [What's available and how they are installed/used]
Versions [Distributions etc]

There should be plenty to write about just from that short list alone :p

It is bad mmmkay. :D Even thinking about it is plagiarism!

I'm sure they used to add subliminal anti-plagiarism messages in our coursework! Was it Java tutor who had software that compared code to check for plagiarism. He'd have tested "Hello world" code, knowing him :p

For the OP, download a Live CD for Ubuntu or Fedora and have a play around and see what you think. :)

That's actually a very good idea. Personally I would try Ubuntu and something like Gentoo [if they do a live CD]. Because some distros are massively different. For instance, Ubuntu is pretty easy to set up, even for a noobie. Whereas some distros have seasoned veterans crying into their beards :p

Seriously!? You've forgotten Newton?! How the blazes?

That's why I suggested it! :p I saw another Linux thread in the Windows forum earlier. Someone else suggested the OP in that thread get a Live CD so they could experience Linux in some form and hopefully be better placed to write a report on Windows v Linux.

Oh and Gentoo do do Live CDs. http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml

Well, I knew it was a Java teacher, but I didn't know if it was Newton...or the one I can't remember :p

Surname began with H... teaches you how not to do things by having you do them for a fortnight first.

I think (but might be wrong) that the Gentoo Live CD isn't like the other Linux Live CDs in that it doesn't run a working install from the CD, but I think that's the name they use for the full install if you've not got internet access, or at least something along those lines.

You can use other Gentoo-based distros like Sabayon, which do have a Live CD.
