I have a P4 3.2Ghz CPU in my 4 year old desktop. I'm looking at buying a laptop, never had one before and I'm a bit lost with the new chipsets.

How would, for example a T5550 1.83Ghz Core 2 Duo compare in raw performance/real world usage to my desktop? My desktop has 1Gb RAM and I'd go for 2Gb in the laptop.

Are there any other factors to consider?

Laptops got it hard to outperform desktops but if you're doing some kind of multitasking or encoding you will see a slight difference.

I think on this one you're looking at maybe 20% extra performance, not more than that i think. Depends on the rest of the components.

Considering a P4 needs to be clocked at least 4ghz to perform as well as a measly 1.6ghz Core 2, the new laptop should fly! Bear in mind that laptops tend to have slow hard drives and memory though, so loading times are a bit crappier than they should be.

Go for a full-blooded Core 2 if you can, something with the full complement of L2 cache.
