xoom-vs-ipad2.jpg

The UK WiFi only XOOM is going to be £500, and I think the iPad 2 will be roughly the same amount in the UK too. As the WiFi only option is $499.

Which will win?

The Ipad 2 would have the most sales overall on the basis of familiarity by a lot more people and an overall roundedness of features and software.

The hardware itself is pretty decent and the software is diverse.

They're all roughly the same tbh but don't forget about the Advent Vega for £250. (Or a cheap iPad 1, SGT7 if it gets honeycomb)

If I had to choose? Probably the BB playbook out of this batch, the OS and TAT apps look brilliant.

NGP will pwn em all at Christmas though :D

Xoom holds no interest. I like the look of asus transformer. But android and apple are missing vital software. I think I'll see if I can get a really cheap ipad1 and see how android compares to Ios5 in 3rd months.

Ipad will take majority sales overall for one device, but the number of units shipped this year will be easily eclipsed by the Android OS devices. If Apple allowed iOS on 3rd party hardware then maybe that could change but that will never happen.

None of the current or up and coming tablets are priced sensibly for my liking, I would use one if there was something good around the £250 point that does not weigh 800 grams or more. It is a real shame that it's netbook power and screens/speed with middle of the road laptop pricing, not really sure how manufacturers justify it tbh. :)

While I like the look of the Playbook, I think you have way too much faith in Blackberry if you think its going to beat the iPad, it might beat the Android tablets though.

You've only just noticed this?

This is the guy that "prefers" a £400+ BlackBerry Torch handset over any £400 Android handset, despite the Torch being a significantly worse device in every conceivable way in terms of hardware specifications and application availability. ;)

It's a shame the Samsung doesn't have a HDMI out port, the specification of the 10.1 would have made it the clear winner had it had HDMI out capabilities.

It's probably got the same MHL port as the SGS2 (microUSB shape but HDMI compatible)

Surly playbook, advising will fail due to lack of apps, regardless of how good os is.

Personally I don't give a monkeys about the number of available apps as long as the basic software is good. (most said the same thing about the iPad last year)

How can you not care about apps. It's like having windows, then installing no software or games. Smart phones/tablets are pretty useless without apps. Unless you use it Purley as web browser.
Jose had access to all iphone apps. So those people where silly for saying that.

Maybe i do lol....i dont think the playbook will beat the ipad2 due to the marketing power of Apple....plus apple have seen what the playbook is all about and have managed to do something about it regarding the specs....not only that its coming to the market a lot quicker than the playbook. But for me the playbook is probably the best choice all round for me as it will go well with my BB devices ie be used in conjunction with the playbook. Plus another reason why i wont touch an apple ipad is that the OS itself is just so closed off unless you jailbreak, which i have done with my ip4 but even thats limited and the apps are rubbish on the jailbreak scene other than a few useful ones.

No flash either on the ipad2...the playbook will have flash enabled when launched....also no multi gestures on the ipad like the playbook has....sure the apps on the playbook wont be as good but then ill ever use a handful which are of use to me ie productivity related....and still the rubbish resolution on the ipad2, why no retina display??.

Anyhow still early days, i personally dont think RIM can compete with Apple...at the moment only Android can possibly compete with apple so lets see what happens in 6 mths time once the ipad2, playbook and other tabs are out on the market.

Wow your really on form arent you???...so whats wrong with me wanting a £400 BB device over a £400 Android device mr smart arse??...i do have a choice and my choice has always been BB and yes like your good self im a fanboi of blackberries, nothing wrong with that as far as im concerned...ive had 2 Android handsets in the past the Desire and Magic and as nice as they are...the platform itself does nothing for me....now if you want to sit there like a complete utter arse and rip me for my choice then please go ahead and do so....i just find it pathetically hilarious that Android fans such as yourself like to rip others for their choices in mobiles but yet will always point the finger at apple fanboi's for the rabidness...each to their own and even though the BB platform isnt as nice or polished as the Android or even iphone i still prefer it over the Android platform....because for what i need it for, it does the job superbly and yes im well aware that your precious Android handsets can do whatever the BB does better or is just as competent in doing them.

No need to get emotional, you obviously don't find it hilarious ;)

I just find it funny that you're an advocate of inferior devices at the same costs as others, it might be your opinion, but there's no getting away from the fact that BlackBerry handsets are worse than others in the market at similar price points.

As for your knee jerk reaction in regards to calling me a Android fan, you'll never find me paying money for Android devices when there's better options are the market for the same price.

I'll quite happily jump ship to Apple, BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7 if I was in the market for a new handset and a certain manufacturer gave me the most for my money. I don't base my decisions on a love for a brand.

Secondly, it's been well documented here that I do not like pure AOSP Android and Android only really suffices for me when it has a decent UI overlay included to which only HTC have managed to meet that criteria.

Anyone would have thought I insulted you in the post

Everyone complained about the lack of tablet specific apps, just like they're doing for Android now. (eg. Phone apps look rubbish scaled up to a large screen etc)

All I need is a great browser, eBook reader, media player, office suite, file browser, email client, calender, a few games, maybe some photo editing software and err that's it :)

My phone takes care of everything else, like navigation based apps, spotify, radio etc. (Edit: I don't really need a tablet tbh, which is why the NGP should be enough for me :D)

What apps would you need/require for a tablet?
