Competitive FPS gaming

Couldnt beat wolfenstein/ ET on JOLT, clanbase.

To many lonesome hero`s now who think taking a objective is pointless as there K/D is more Important.

I blame a lot of this on COD and stupid team death match game modes.

depends what we talking about low to med stuff like edom twl and the like or higher end like clanbase

a lot of it isnt about with games not using mods which basically makes most new games unplayable in comps and so on.

bf3 though from what i seen so far has the basics already built in serverside so maybe it could be a good comp scene for that .

if no money gets put up for it though theyll be nothing.

also the amount of hacks in compside is silly and reason a lot dont bother now. everyone wants to be a pro :( but not learn to play and just use dl skill .

Unfortunately the birth of true FPS games on console platforms seems to have started the "killing off" of the once magical nature that was competitive FPS on the PC.

There are those that still do play competitively, take CS1.6 for example - still plenty of high-end activity for that, but unfortunately the UK scene is appalling, the Euro scene is a lot better and still active.

Similar story with CS:S, a lot of the UK is now filled with a newer "generation" of gamers, that play casual, quite frankly couldn't give a rat's arse about the game, and play it because they have nothing to do. UK scene is still very active, but again the Euro scene is a lot bigger and better.

COD, in my opinion, was the start of all this. I don't mean the old Call of Duty's, like COD2 etc, but COD4 onwards, when consoles started to flourish, really brought down the PC etiquette so developers focussed more on a console market where there is still huge money to be made. Console games are designed in more of a "pick-up and go" culture, the same sort of way WoW is heading in as well. It's all about downloadable content that developers can leech even more money from (strictly FPS here).

I'd love to have the old PC communities back for gaming. Heck I even remember doing some of the old Delta-Force tournaments, and they were ace!

Counter-Strike 1.3-1.6 days were the Best for big competitions

I used to play for 4Kings, so ive had my fair share of Competitive gaming on a higher level than most normal people.

However, its DEAD now.

Ahhh 4Kings, been a long time since they were at the top of the game :D :p

But alas you're right, 1.3-1.6 was the best era for CS by far.

Saying that just had me looking through all my old files for alltherage. Christ that brings back memories!

No dedicated servers, lack of customisation of server files to cater for competitive play. Just plagued by console ports now. BF3 will be different hopefully..

I had fun competitively playing CSS, won money or hardware at LANs and met some great people, but everyone I knew has moved on like me.

Console's killed competitive gaming. Turned everyone into casual gamers and the fact theres no dedicated servers on consoles doesn't help.

OCUK BF3 clan league anyone ;)

its ok I've had a few beers and waiting on the bloody bc2 patch to dload grrrr

TF2 comp is still going strong.

Though I hate to disagree with you, this is arguable. The next 3-6 months will be the deciding factors for TF2.

Away from the fact that MPUK still 'show' continued suport is good, though with so many new and interesting titles coming out over the same period, it will be interesting to see how many players move away.

Myself, I am particularly interested in BF3. Not so much on the competitive side, more just because it's a hilarious game to play with friends :)

It's hard to say why the 'Competitive Scene' has declined over the last few years. Personally, I think it's a number of factors which include some of the following:

1. Money - Companies making the games as well as companies willing to pump money into events

2. Consoles - In the past, PC Gaming was the shiz, now it's all about consoles. I can't remember the last time I actually saw a PC game ONLY advert. A good testimont to that is where the PC Game section is situated in your local computer game store

3. Time - To actually be 'competitive' you have to play a lot, time just isn't possible for most now, though that's my personal opinion

4. Choice - Believe it or not with SOOOO many games, everyone is a jack of all trades, master of none. When I played competitve TFC..CS..even TF2 it was state of the art. How many games are really 'state of the art' these days'

The next 12 months for competitive gaming in general will be interesting as well, especially considering the economy and things looking to go downwards.

PS. Infused - Fluffy? If not, ignore me :)

Competitive scene is still around from what I can see, just maybe in different games than you are used to. To be fair stuff like Starcraft 2 has drawn some of the attention away from FPS.

The main game I still play (Quakeworld) is almost exclusively driven by the competitive element, basically the whole scene revolves arond 4v4 TDM with occasional duel tournaments and then some casual 2on2/FFA on the side. Even the development of the game (now community maintained) retains a competitive element in terms of the sort of features that get added. For a game that is so old, it is surprisingly advanced from a feature standpoint and has a huge array of configuration options that people tweak for competitive play (as an example, my cfg is around 130K in size).

Obviously, the scene is smaller than it once was (only around 30 active clans) but I suspect this is the case across many games. I think QW probably has the best setup for competitive play though; according to a clanmate of mine who plays Quake Live for the UK team, QW is ahead of it in that regard.

Surely there must still be a big scene in CS1.6?
