Competitive FPS gaming

Competitive scene is still around from what I can see, just maybe in different games than you are used to. To be fair stuff like Starcraft 2 has drawn some of the attention away from FPS.

The main game I still play (Quakeworld) is almost exclusively driven by the competitive element, basically the whole scene revolves arond 4v4 TDM with occasional duel tournaments and then some casual 2on2/FFA on the side. Even the development of the game (now community maintained) retains a competitive element in terms of the sort of features that get added. For a game that is so old, it is surprisingly advanced from a feature standpoint and has a huge array of configuration options that people tweak for competitive play (as an example, my cfg is around 130K in size).

Obviously, the scene is smaller than it once was (only around 30 active clans) but I suspect this is the case across many games. I think QW probably has the best setup for competitive play though; according to a clanmate of mine who plays Quake Live for the UK team, QW is ahead of it in that regard.

Surely there must still be a big scene in CS1.6?

I wanna get into quake world, On my quake on steam If i right click it has quake world, but the colors are all messed up, im guessing that version on steam is outdated anyway?

Yeah Quakeworld that ships with Steam is likely the latest official release from id (1998!).

To get it updated you should get hold of nQuake from here: http://nquake.com/ , this should let you update to a more user-friendly package with modern client (ezQuake), additional maps, textures etc.

If you have any trouble try reading/posting on the forum at www.quakeworld.nu which is our primary community site.
Also if you have IRC you could drop into #qwrookie on Quakenet to ask for help.

I used to play CAL with a mostly American CSS team years ago.....that was great fun and a really good challenge. It seems that when CAL ceased to exist the whole CSS competitive seen died. All European leagues are absolutely terrible (ESL/ ED). Schedule your own matches?? wtf is that about?? How can you have a league table where some people play 100 matches and some play 4.....They're full of brand new account Germans that are so blatantly hacking its just pathetic nowadays anyway.

Lets get a bit real, Quakeworld is 15 years old.
How is 30 clans an active game?

How can you possibly say BF3 will have a half decent competitive side when it hasnt been released and the last 2-3 titles in the series go against you!

What happened to CAL anyway?

Ive always wanted to be more involved in competitive gaming but its a lot of time to give for just games. I mean I spent years playing cs as a past time but I dont really have anything to show for it.
An olympic runner or somthing may not the get medal but at least he still has a pretty sweet body afterwards....

The point I'm making is that in QW at least the scene is still focused on competitive gaming, and I'm putting forward the idea that presumably this will still be the case in other FPS games that have more clans (e.g. CS1.6). Besides, the OP is asking about competitive FPS gaming not necessarily about super-active scenes with thousands of clans.

Cant remember exactly after what season it was (approximately 2-3 years ago), but pretty much without any warning the website just shut down. There was rumours that someone bought the company that was behind it and the domain and turned it into a totally different business....not sure how true that is. I still play with the same guys from that original team from about 5 years ago which is pretty cool, considering we're all from different places etc etc. We still play CSS matches and play other games like BFBC2, were just not as competitive as we used to be as there's no well run leagues. :(

Edit: Just found this (guess what I said above was correct) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberathlete_Professional_League (bottom paragraph)

If you look at an eSports team webpage you will see:
Starcraft 2
CS - Which is still quite large, probably the biggest competitive FPS
A MOBA, probably DotA, maybe LoL.
And then possibly WoW.

Quake Live is indeed the lone standard bearer for the "old school" competitive FPS. I'd be very surprised indeed if the QW community is indeed larger, like some have suggested, plus the harsh truth is anyone still playing a 20-year-old game will be so experienced that no beginner would be able to even touch them.

I'm still hoping every day that Id will give us Rocket Arena in QL though, I still played RA3 up till quite recently, it was the game that got me into making other people explode online. (My connection was just too laggy for regular Q3 matches, 1v1 RA3 was all it could handle. I got really good at leading my targets with the rocket launcher to make up for the lag:))

Counter-Strike 1.3-1.6 days were the Best for big competitions

I used to play for 4Kings, so ive had my fair share of Competitive gaming on a higher level than most normal people.

However, its DEAD now.

As was I! (though only for a few months :p)

What time period was you in them / who with?

CSS is still very competitive in the UK, especially on ESL. (EAS/EPS)

COD4 is also still very competitive, though the skillbase is very low compared to what it was a year or so ago. Most the players that were at the top end of COD4 came from COD2, and are now at an age where their going to uni etc so have quit or whatever, leaving all the annoying kids (most of them use hacks but get away with it because they all stick up for eachother lol)
