Competitive game based on Skill, not Time played?

Im gonna suggest Super Monday Night Combat. Matches you by skill not level and pretty consistantly will not match you with new players once youve learned the game. Can be a bit hard to grasp at first, helps if youve played and any kind of DOTA game. There is a good guide and video in the game as well and all the important things are listed clearly. Even though the basics can be boiled down to: Kill Bots, Dont Die, Push Lanes.

Only downside is the game can be frustrating until you get the hang of it - but once you do its a really really good game.

And luckily its free on Steam! (But thankfully not Pay to Win...)

Rise of FLight, definitely. People can fly identical planes but if one is a top 20 pplayer, the the lower ranked guys would not last 10 seconds. All due to superior skill. The other thing going for it is zero cheating online - game's never been cracked.

get 4 friends go on cs 1.6 and search high skilled games.. :D you'l get walloped by cheating germans time and time again but eventually you'l get the hang of it.. maybe..

Cant believe I missed this game - does it play like red baron? Lost so much time to that one on the Amiga!

wow no cheaters!? i'll have to try it lol.

loads of online games are ruined by cheats.

WarRock for example is an epic FPS and took a lot of skill especially as a sniper bullet drop etc, but cheating has killed it.

If you like Red Baron- you'll LOVE this. It's free to play with two planes and then you can buy (or not buy) the planes you want, so you must try it! :) It's multiplayer is absolutely awesome!

Some gameplay:

Yep, ROF has zero cheaters. None, zilch. No invisible skins, no aimbots, no ufo physics hacks - fairplay all the way.

League table (although they are reworking it at the moment): http://riseofflight.com/en/community/leaderboard/Multiplayer

Its one of the very few games where DRM has worked- it's been available for three years and none of its versions was ever cracked by pirates.

That's pretty amazing.

That's pretty amazing.

It's an amazing game made by an amazing developer with an amazing community support ;)

It's pretty much the only game I play now - mostly in multiplayer mode.

Unless you mean ranks that give you no in-game benefits at all.

In RoF, higher ranking gives you no benefits in-game. The ranking system is simply there to feel accomplishment when you kill a high ranked pilot and progress towards the number one spot yourself. Just like in WW1, imagine how cool did the pilot who shot down the Red Baron felt - exactly the same here, shooting down a top 20 pilot feels incredible. His plane is not faster, hisbullets are same as everyone else's ... It's the pilot that is dangerous, brain, tactics, decisions, marksmanship, piloting skills and nothing else.

Empire Total War and Napoleon Total War both award you with a Star based system completely based on your Victories.

The good players can be up to 10 stars. I'm personally a 4 so less than average haha! Some matches online ask for a minimum calibre of player.

Shogun 2 has a similar looking system but it's actually different as players do rank up with time aswell, ignoring skill.

Hey guys and girls

I'm after a competitive multi-player game with a ranking system that rewards players for winning and puts you against players of similar skill, rather than a game that rewards players for just playing (game time)

For example Call of Duty puts you against any level player and you can rank up even if you're terrible

So is there any game (don't mind if its FPS, Strategy ETC....) that has a competitive multi-player with a ranking system based on player skill?

Thanks :)

But ranking up isn't what makes you a good player and doesn't show that, take your reward from topping servers, that is the true showing. cod4 and below of course, its poo since.

Wow.. thanks guys for all the suggestions :) they will certainly keep me busy.

@ Hank_Marvin, I think Rank is important if ranking up is dependant on skill, ~I'll use Halo 3's ranking system as an example.

If I'm a level 39 and I'm playing against level 40's and I win it shows that I'm better than they are (to a certain extent) and so will rank up, also there is a sense of accomplishment with ranking up, I couldn't stop smiling when I got my first 50 in Halo 3, it mean't I was in a very small community of elite players.

If ranking is based on how much you play a game then I agree that a rank doesn't show how good you are, someone who has played a game for years could still be awful.

Tribes Ascend is a good one.

Obviously there is a little bit of the F2P downsides but it doesn't take long to get a few good upgrades and it's 99% skill.

Problem is the two variables aren't completely unrelated, since some would argue that the decision making that is enhanced by playing the game more is a skill.

Take FPS games for example, more experienced players will know the map layouts better (by which I mean to an advanced level not just how to get from A to B), will know the best places to spam, will have developed better teamplay etc. That is a 'skill' but a factor in that skill is the amount of time played.
