Complete Players

What is Steven Gerrard missing?

I don't think he has been as much of a complete player as he should be - but he tackles well, works hard, scores all types of goals (usually screamers), can defend. He's very quick as well when he gets going.

Don't see what he could be missing.
Forgot about Gerrard!

He's more or less complete you could say. IMO he posses the ability to pick games up by the scruff of the neck and win them on his own. Not many people can do that in a team that isn't playng particularly well as a whole.

Gerrard can head it. Seen him score a fair few. One was in the Champions League Final wasn't it? Vieira was more skillful... Therefore Gerrard not complete.

[/pedantic_complete_player mode] :p

I don't think we'll agree on any complete players at this rate :p

Actually are there any? If we're totally pedantic about the downfalls of certain players I don't think there is a 100% complete player.

Ronaldo, Fabregas and Gerrard are about as close you get in the Premiership at least anyway.

I think there's a reason why there's so many rumours about Berbatov going to a Big Club for silly money - he is the complete forward.

He can play as a lone striker or as part of a pair. He can head the ball or he can play it on the play. He can score and set goals up. He's strong but still has the pace to get past players (though it's not always obvious how much pace he has thanks to his relaxed style of play). He's not even a bad tackler - he's scored quite a few goals by nicking the ball off a defender. His only weakness is his attitude.

George Weah, he was out of this world when he won World footballer of the year that season.

Good shout, Weah was an outstanding finisher and could literally run circles around defenders. He was lethal during his early days at Milan. What always sticks in my mind was the way he used to 'poke' the ball past the goalkeeper.

Can't score against the big clubs. 4 whilst in England. Keane is more complete than him imo.

George Weah and Batistuta must have been close to the complete player.

I think many people do not realise how good Batistuta really was.

I also thought Lothar Matthaus was probably one of the best players i've seen in the past 20 years.(in 1990 world cup he was a rock.)

I don't think I've ever seen Robbie Keane head the ball and I don't think he could play effectively upfront on his own. It's surprising that he scored more Premiership goals in 2007 than any other player though - especially as he often got deployed deep or on the wing.

Berbatov's record against big clubs doesn't make him any less of a complete player. 4 goals in, what, 12 matches isn't a bad return. Don't forget that Henry couldn't play in big games. :p

At present, if were talking in terms of physique, two footedness, speed, aerial ability, goals and creativity - Ronaldo is in his own league imo :)

Some absolutely absurd posts on here.

By most of your criteria - the "complete" player doesn't exist.

Maradona wouldn't of been as he didn't score enough headers, Franco Baresi wasn't a complete defender as he didn't have enough pace - ridiculous.

Berbatov is nowhere near being a "complete" centre forward - his goal ratio isn't anywhere near enough, and his attitude, particularly when the side are under pressure, is dire.

Additionally, Cristiano Ronaldo has no chance of being in this bracket, as his balance in the penalty area is definitely suspect.

batistuta would be my shout from the past, could finish with both feet and header the ball. also was strong and possessed decent pace. Currently i tihnk drogba has to be up there for a complete forward. Ronaldo as a winger, as for defenders cant think of anyone thhat really stands out. Terry is slow(i know he has good positional sense) but still i think pace is needed to be complete

I was talking about teams in the top half of the league, not the top 4!!!

What about Touré, he was a striker when coming to the club - and Wenger converted him into one of the best centre backs the league has. He's great going forward.

What about some of the stars of the total football side from Holland in the seventies?

It depends on what you mean by complete. If you're looking for somebody that can do everything (tackle, pass, shoot, head, cross etc) to a fairly high standard then imo the nearest you'll come to that is Gerrard.

The only two at the moment that are close to that level in the premiership are Ronaldo and Fabregas.

Ronaldo needs to mature mentally a little more, he's come leaps and bounds in the few years he's been playing for us.

Fabregas was only basically missing the goals, but this season he's looking fantastic and if it continues there's no doubting he'll turn into a true complete player. He needs a bit more pace (not saying he's slow), and to be a better finisher and he's pretty much there for the role he plays.
