Have to put my tuppence in...
Recently bought a laptop, and as it came with Norton AV, installed that rather than shelling out for something else. *Definitely* slower afterwards. Even the wife, who'se totally computer literate but not into paying much attention to performance like I am, complained about the drop in performance.
And not just on the laptop either. Every machine I have ever built then installed Norton on (friends, family and my own included) have been noticeably slower after the Norton install.
Recently ran a couple of free online scanners (Trend Micro's Housecall and Bitdefender) on a friends pc - they have Norton 2005 installed - because it was playing up, and discovered 4 viruses on the pc that Norton had missed.
Needless to say I *won't* renew my Norton subscription or upgrade to NIS2007......
