Complete waste of £80 million

Didn't the Tate Modern have the same negative comments when it was opened in Liverpool, look at what has happened since in that area, sometimes these run down ares need a catalyst to 'jump start' the regeneration.

My local county council spent £38m building itself a new headquarters:

The V&A seems like an utter bargain by comparison. I've seen the outside in person, and it's stunning. Next time I'm in the city, it will be open. Cannot wait to visit.

A wonderful new building that will hopefully boost the area and inspire people in education. My daughter isn't study arts but the V&A in London is one of her favourite places thanks to school trips and helped grow her appreciation of broader areas of history and arts.

Bristol could seriously learn a thing or two about getting projects completed now that our muppet of a mayor has scuppered the plans for an arena any time soon.

Looks pretty awesome and is totally worth while foe the area.

You can spend all the money you want on the homless they'll still homeless. Cancer research already has more money than it knows what to do with and 80 million is barely enough to buy toilet paper for hospitals given thier waste. (Or 6% of thier annual negligence claim cost)

Society does not advance by trying to drag the bottom rung up

Society moves at the at the pace of those at the bottom...... it's the right thing to do.

God, what a bleak and colourless world these earnest lefties want us all to live in, no museums [ unless they are tractor museums ] no parks,
public artworks or tax funded festivities.
maybe i'm missing something, but why are the left wanting that? liberalism is far more closely linked to the arts than conservatism.

Looks like a pretty nice building tbh...

The NHS is already getting increased funding, unemployment has decreased yet again, employment is still pretty much at record highs. If some smack heads want to refuse help/not attempt to help themselves and sleep on the streets then that's up to them, it shouldn't stop the rest of society from having nice things like museums etc.. or make anyone feel guilty.

Seriously?

Not all homeless are addicted to Smack....

Some are actually homeless due to no fault of their own.

Such an ignorant and spiteful comment to make. You need to look in a mirror and shake your head in shame.

Didn't you know that all the faults of facism are now being shoehorned into the SJW/liberal category? Fake news on an indoctrinated scale.

Museum looks great.

From the photos, have to say it looks nice. I quite like it.

£80 mill doesn't sound like a ludicrous amount for a building of that size. Is it?

No it's not, as i said earlier it's a bit of a bargain.
Before he retired, my dad was a project manager for a Motorway Services company. At the time (20 years ago) a typical motorways services cost between £20m/£30m to build, at £80m for V&A Dundee i know which is the better value for money.

Society moves at the at the pace of those at the bottom...... it's the right thing to do.

Society doesn't move at the pace of the slowest and it should not either

innovative companies, great scientists and inventors don't move at the rate of the slowest common denominator.

Seeking some form of 'cosmic justice' where we are all equal is a disatatrous idea, especially for the less capable.

As Yaron Brooks explains with a basketball analogy (hes and older male). If you wanted equality in basketball you can't make everyone as good a player as LeBron James. Rather you must cripple James down to the level of the lowest common denominator.

Don't think it's a waste, we need Museums. It's a long term investment and so it will last 100's or more years hopefully.

That said, for £80m, I would had expected it to be bigger then two floors.

Except you're so invariably wrong.

Inventors nowadays anyway, only invent things people want (unless they're weirdos), usually trash cosmetic items as well no less, that is moving with the lowest common denominator, scientists are restricted by funding levels and company/university focus (as well as a rather pointlessly arbitrary amount of "work" done to compete for said funding, usually all subpar minuscule steps)... This funding/focus is entirely down to investment opportunities coming into companies/universities nowadays as Government doesn't give a **** about science in reality. Investment is driven ENTIRELY by desires in the open market, only a TINY TINY amount of work coming out of Universities is considered what you think it is.

This is perhaps the strange problem with capitalism, but that's neither here nor there, if the government, especially our own government gave a single **** about actual innovation rather than pumping up property markets, things could have been different.

I had a sneak preview of the interior before opening, as we're considering sponsoring it. Absolutely stunning design, beautiful.

Dundee is not without its problems, but they're investing in many different things to try and improve them. A V&A will be a big tourist draw for the city (I hope so anyway, with all the new hotels going up!).

Indeed, it is stunning but as some have said the strange angular outside shape has left vast areas of unusable space in the interior this plus the invariable cafes, shops and tourist outlets has left the building being smaller on the inside than it should.

Yes, I remember a few years back Ford were about to invest in a factory off the Kingsway, that was before even a sod was cut the unions started bitching about terms and conditions and Ford gave them the two fingers and sensibly decamped to Belgium where the Belgers were grateful for the investment.

Poeple talked a lot about how our Titanic building etc was a waste of money. They had no clue how much outside interest is for that kinda thing and is now a worldclass rated attraction. Place is raking in money and tourism for Belfast.

Have only seen it in a semi complete state from the outside and it was quite a sight even then - look forward to getting a proper look at / round it sometime soon.

Will do Dundee the world of good longer term. All they need to do now is bring back Fat Sams...

I think its great. Ideally placed opposite RRS Discovery which is a great visit as well.
