Hi all

Yesterday a user commented in one of the steam sale threads saying something like he rarely completed games and only played them partially, is this common amongst many people? I see that as a total waste of money, just wondered what others thoughts on this were?

I can't remember the exact thread but it did irk me somewhat!.

I have only completed a handful of games out of a shed load that I own :( Sadly, this is because I always buy the latest bloody games out!

Soon, I will go back and complete all the ones I have.

+1

And that is a lie. I've tried that hundreds of times and only managed to complete one or two :p

Its true but i can say i've really only completed 5 of the 38 games i have.

Limbo, Mafia II, portal, portal 2 and Sleeping Dogs.

Though i have many games where i've done all the story mission but i won't say i've finished with it. Like Skyrim, Fallout, Just Cause, Far Cry.

Racing Games are impossible to complete aswell..

As are Games Like Counter strike Source and Chivalry.

Games now-a-days seem to be made so they can't be completed in the conventional sense.

Ha who completes games. Isn't the point just to buy them try them for 5 minutes and move on to the next.

Come to think of it, I never completed Far Cry 2 but that was because it was a poor game. I haven't completed SC2 campaign but spend a few hours on it daily so i've definitely got my money's worth there!

Ive only completed a few games to 100% most I do the story and some side missions and then leave it, and some I play for a few minuets and then leave them, but im going back to them now as the xmas sales on games have been pretty bad.

Before the boom of the Steam sales and such, I used to complete just about every title I bought. Nowadays, there is a larger number of games I don't finish, which is to be expected, as a hell of a lot of bargains bought in sales are 'tasters' from the menu (taking a chance on something I otherwise wouldn't because of the price).

Tbh i find it amazing how many games people buy on here and dont complete or even start. Steam really do have a good model for making money!

I only have 3 or 4 uncompleted games at a time

always complete games, unless there stupidly hard/dont like - currently churning through sleeping dogs, and completed farcry 3 before that.

the act of completing a game is easier than most people think and you can kinda churn through most games in less time then many online peps say. (bc they always overestimate!)

you just need to actually bother trying.

All the games in my steam list have been completed unless

a) its multiplayer only
b) came with an indie bundle that doesn't interest me

Working through rage atm on and off but it will get complete

Generally speaking I would estimate the following of games that I actually start playing:

60% Completed
20% Given up on fairly early on due to not liking the game or some other problem (bugs etc)
20% Given up on after at least several hours typically due to getting stuck but with an intention to return to someday. And I do actually go back to old savegames sometimes; Halflife I completed after about a 2.5 year break, and GTA3 I returned to after a 6 year break (I got past the bit I was stuck on, but then got stuck again, so it is in hibernation again!)

As aimtheoneneo suggests completing games isn't that hard if you commit to doing it and choose games from genres you enjoy (to reduce the learning curve). About 9 years ago I took the decision to attack single player games a lot more as the previous 5 years I'd basically just spent playing multiplayer with only half a dozen games getting completed. Since then, I've completed nearly 200 games (note by 'completed' I mean beating the main campaign or whatever, not 100% completion).

You do need a bit of dedication in terms of not just quitting at the first sign of trouble, persevere and if necessary read online for some guidelines on how to beat a troublesome section. Also and this probably sounds a bit stupid but make sure you play the game more than once. Don't just install, play for 30mins, quit, and then never load it again. Make a concerted effort to load it up again the next day.

Going back to the OP, I don't think that playing games partially is necessarily a waste of money, since either the player has got some enjoyment from that playtime, or they haven't enjoyed it in which case maybe it is best to cut their losses and move on to something else.

Finished at least 9 games now I think, though that doesn't include playing through all 4 broken sword games or both the discworld games (noir doesn't count as much) repeatedly.

Too much time wasted on civ and fm to finish everything else.

Have finally gone through the HL and Portal groups of games which was nice, really need to get through a few others though, mainly Pharaoh (only so many times you can get 4/5ths of the way through that and not finish) and the Thief collection.

Also need to do Mafia one properly after 3 attempts and getting stuck towards the end (in Chinatown last time).

Seems to be really common to own a fair few games and never really get through them, most of my console games are like that too (Shenmue the worst one staring at me)

Mafia 1's ending is amazing, if you've tried 3 times then the ending will probably bring a tear to your eye, it did for me. then play Mafia 2 to understand how it all links in ;)

On another note I used to finish games to completion, last but one was probably in fact Mafia 2 about 2 years ago as I loved it, the last one was Dishonoured as it was similarly amazing :)

I have so many games I can never decide what to try and get into. I usually just end up playing dirt or need for speed, really need to try and play something through but just don't have the staying power I used to have.

I finish about 50℅ of what I buy.

I've got dishonored, hitman absolution, resi 6, black ops 2 and morrowind on time go at the minute.
