Completing games

Only games ive completed are
Half-Life
HL2 (ep1,2)
Assassins creed 1,2
Anno 2070 is ongoing :)

over 200 games in Steam now, doubt ill finish them (TFL/Sniper Elite V2 Ongoing)

Finished most of the games I own, but had to "stall" some games because I could not be arsed (Psychonauts for example, just got bored and could not enjoy the sandbox, no matter how hard I tried), or because of technical issues (Vice City on Steam was completely broken for me).

Also, some MP games that I thought would be amazing (L4D2, CSS) were overshadowed by far more enjoyable (*for me*) games like BF3 and UT3.

However, I do purchase every game with the intent of completing it, even though you can sometimes be horribly disappointed in a game that you thought would be brilliant.

The last game I completed was Prince of Persia on the PS3 as I was off ill for a week so had the time - goodness knows the last game I finished on the PC as I only tend to play FPS. Thinking about it probably Return to Castle Wolfenstein (LOL)

Having bought a few single player games in the latest Steam sale I would like to think I would try and finish some but now with a family and house to maintain I probably only get an hour or two gaming time a week if I'm lucky, most of that is on L4D2.

I rarely complete games but have a personal policy that for every pound it cost me to buy the game, I should get an hours worth of gaming (10 hours = £10). If I get that out of it, then to me I haven't wasted any money :)

I complete the majority of mine.

Not so much the quick pick up cheapies on steam, but the games that I plan on buying I always complete. Don't see much of a point in not doing so. Kinda like watching a film half way through, or reading the first couple of chapters in a book.

That is an interesting idea, but a pound per hour is kinda high comparing it to the costs of other entertainment e.g. going out for a meal, cinema, buying bluray.

I never place a monetary value on the length of a game. Some of the best gameplay experiences are under ten hours, yet have cost me 30-40 quid. I personally think enjoyment comes before how much £/hour the game cost you.

quality>quantity.

I hardly ever complete any game before moving on to the next one and get loads of money's worth:

I play a game, lose interest and drop it for another one, come back to it months or sometimes years later, forget what it was about so I start again, get roughly to the point I left off last time, lose interest, move on to the next game, and so it goes on. One big loop, great!

That's how I get great enjoyment out of most games, going right back to what are now considered classics, even emulated Amiga and AtariST games.

Couldn't be better.

I only complete a game if it holds my attention in all honesty. I'm working on completing HL2 at the moment, completed Trine 2 Gobline Menace last night and still have to complete Dead Space 2, FONV Main Story and several others...

I tend to prefer sandbox games which explains it, I suppose. I don't really like things that are on rails as it makes me lose interest.

How is it high compared to those things?

Cinema is about £10 for 2 hours on average, so £5 per hour.
A half decent meal out will be £20 per head, let's be generous and say that gives you 4 hours, you're looking at £5 per hour again at least. If it's not a really big event, 2 hours is more likely and so you're into the realms of £10 per hour.
BluRay is similar to cinema but you do have the advantage that you can watch it again, so call it £12 for 6 hours - you're still at £2 per hour.

I'm baffled how you can think £1 per hour of gaming is high compared to those things?

Even if i do finish games, steam achievements generally have me go back and play again.

Finished HL2 and FONV recently, torchlight 2 has my time at the minute, finished with 2 of the characters so going through a 3rd time on hardest difficulty, again mainly to get the achievements >_<

Achievements really don't bother me in all honesty. They seem a bit pointless. Maybe it's just me. I wish you could just hide the damned things. :p

very rarely i finish any games now, i am not really into playing single players games, so i tend to only buy games with good multiplayer :)

Gives games re-playability and have you aim towards something instead of just finishing the game, im a sucker for them haha

Sorry I should have added that I only do this for games that I do not complete or do not get into. I 100% agree that 4 hours of good quality gaming is better than 100 hours of rubbish.

I think he means the amount of hours is a bit high, as you've just proved. I know that's what I thought.

I get bored with single player games far too easily, so I've not completed many games. They really have to grip me.

Max Payne 1 & 2, Mafia 2. Red Dead Redemption & Hard Rain on console.

Many others I start, play for maybe 2 hours and never go back to. I do intend to go back to Max Payne 3, I think I've done about 5 hours so far.

It probably sounds silly, but it puts me right off if I hear a game takes 20+ hours to complete. If I know it's around 12 hours, I'm happy and will start working towards that. Higher and I get put off :(

I do wonder sometimes if achievements are a generational thing. The oldies among us, myself included, who grew up playing games in the 80s find them tedious/pointless, while the younger generation for whom games have nearly always had them built in (can't really remember when they started becoming popular to be honest) find them an essential part of the experience?

Discuss :)

Oh and on topic, I used to finish pretty much every game I had as if I was dropping £30 of my hard earned I'd make sure it was a game I'd enjoy first (reviews, demos etc) and then I'd be determined to complete it to get my monies worth. Now with steam sales plus far less time I rarely finish things unless they're amazing. Still regret the ones I haven't though -

Mafia 2 I had a mission glitch or something and it wouldn't continue

Borderlands 2 I kept getting annoyed when the save point was so far back and I had to keep battling through the same area again and again

Max Payne 3 started and then got distracted and never went back to it

etc

The most played game I have is always a muliplayer ie BF3 at the moment so no chance of completing it :)

Other than that I have Skyrim which I love and yet I tend to play for a few weeks then it sits for a while before I go back to it. Have also just been bought Farcray 3 and I would imagine this will be the same.

What does baffle me is the amount of games people have that they don't play ie steam sales. This seems quite common now

i only finish games if i enjoy them a lot

this.

same as me.

i tend to complete SP focus games like mafia 2, batman etc.

i buy from teh steam sales so i can play then during the cooldown of game releases between Jan-april time when hardly any games comes out.
