Was working fine for 3 months or so, but now - Lights and fans come on, but its not booting up at all- what could be wrong?

Ummm... mobo is a p67 pro, power is stealth stream 2, 600w - have a red led flashing on the mobo to the top right btw, just noticed now i have the case open

Try unplugging all peripherals, hdds, optical drives from the MB and 1 stick of memory.

Test to see if it will post.

that is the DRAM LED, so would say a memory issue

That's right. To try and get it to boot either remove one of the memory sticks, if that doesn't work you can try it with the other. Else you can press the memok switch until the dram led starts flashing, that'll force the mobo to try and redo the timings on the memory and hopefully get it booted.

psu maybe? the flashing light indicates there is a problem with the ram, but the smell could be completly unrelated, or maybe the motherboard is shorting on the case or something?

mobo for sure. not sure what else links to that area of the mobo, hopefully nothing to do with the cpu that could damage that too.
psu should be fine. as for the case, you need to see if there is any obvious reason as to why the case and motherboard could have come in contact with eachother.
