tried to upgrade my bios on a as rock z68 extreme 4 gen 3

now it wont boot into windows 10

just goes though the motions and the little start line appears but not attempt to boot of the ssd

Can you get into settings? Pressing Del on startup.
If so, try resetting back to default settings.
You can also try using your clear CMOS button on the back of your board.

yes been into the bios.. set all to ahci.. then realised that the ssd was on sata 3.0 and not enabled so enabled booting for sata 3.0

didn't help so moved the ssd into sata position 2..still boots to the white hyphen

Sounds like what would happen if you try and boot a uefi install as legacy or the other way around.

Is there a legacy/uefi mode switch in that bios? A quick google suggest that there is. I would start here :)

guess it was a legacy install at that's what the bois was set to default and I don't think I changed it originally

Can you put the disk in another machine? I had something similar on my install where a bios update bricked the UEFI boot partition.

not this evening as don't have another machine to hand

Got windows 10 boot media? If so boot to advanced recovery. From here you have the console so can jump into diskpart and have a look at the disk layout. You can also attempt the fix boot. Really you need to know what kind of install it is before you can properly troubleshoot.

I see this on laptops all the time where they have a legacy install and refuse to boot into it. For example the hp745 g3, supports both legacy and uefi but you will never get it to boot a legacy install made on another machine, at least not with 10 or so machines I have tried. I spent days trying and gave up, put the disk in a clevo machine and it booted straight away in legacy mode.

First port of call though. Put it back on the same bios it had and see if you can boot it on that?
Edit: Removed the question about flashback as realised you must have the board booting. :) doh.

Normally that would depend on the hardware. Some software such as ryzen master uses UEFI commands to interface with the bios. Personally id just work out what install you have, make sure the bios is set up properly and then go from there. I hate reinstalling so will go to sometimes extraordinary lengths to save an install.

thanks for all your help.. me too will have to reinstall everything so will be a massive pain but better than losing the use of everything.. teach me to be more careful.. but first time ive lost things after a successful bios update so to speak..live and learn. cant even get into the advance repair section currently

Meh it happens. Normally though it's just because all your bios settings get reset so you can just work it all out again and away you go. On the very rare occasion have I seen boot partitions lost.

well now its wont find the drive accessible even after a fresh install so I'm guessing the bios is corrupted and windows install wrote the new install to that drive..

not sure where I go from here.. new motherboard I,m guessing
