Hello. i built my computer several months ago and things have been fine. last night i didn't shut down my computer but just switch it off. this morning i turn on my computer and it asks to start in safe mode. this is ok. i try safe mode and it gets to the windows loading screen before a blue screen flashes up and it restarts. this happens with all versions of safe mode, when i start windows normally, and when i try using the previous known working settings. any ideas whats gone wrong/ how to get things working again?

oh dear...

You did whats known as a "Dirty Shutdown".... Windows doesn't like that .. neither does linux but at least that generally self repairs.

I suspect that BSOD your getting says something like "Windows encountered corrupted file.. blah blah..

If this is the first time your've seen this screen try restarting".

Did you save out a backup or "Roll Back" date you can revert to?

Write down what file is being reported as corrupted and google it. You might be able to copy it across manually. If not...

Got your system disc handy ?

i just did a chkdsk using my windows cd..i'll try now.. then maybe i'lll try some other stuff like

fixboot
fixmbr
??

the blue screen is really too fast to see what the error is . as soon as it appears it restarts

Fix boot wont help or mbr. The issue is not with the boot record, but corrupt data on the drive. A full disk check may fix it, if it is i a dodgy sector but you will prob be repairing your install via the cd

Also for future reference if you right click "my computer" and go to "properties" then the advanced tab, click "settings" under "startup and recovery" and untick "automatically restart" this will leave the BSOD on screen so you can see it. (windows XP)
