Computer Issues

Having issues with a computer here.

Computer appears to load fine but as soon as windows xp loads you get a black screen and the mouse appears, but the computer is completly locked up and the mouse can't be moved etc, only way to get out of it is to hold off button.

Tried chkdsk /r, fixboot and a repair none of which works.

Problem was caused by it being switched off at mains while installing a program, anyone got any ideas ?

EDIT: I should mention safe mode has same problem...

Yeah.... thats a good way to get some corrupt files. Most probably a backup + reinstall of windows will fix this issue

Yh it does seem pretty shafted, but I came on here for a last attempt to not have to reinstall haha

Someone else might have some other ideas, I tend to be a bit reinstall happy.

Tried booting in to safe mode, might rebuild the start up procedure.

Last known good configuration? What were you installing?

Its a colleagues computer and his son turned it off while installing anti-virus

OS? Does he have installation cds?

If its win7 or Vista should be able to repair the boot files with the installation disc, without a format.

Yup, I would try a repair first before a complete reinstall..

Can do that with XP as well, just not as well advertised!

I found the xp one never works properly, never used vista but the win7 one has worked a few times for me!

Happened to me a while ago. A black screen with the mouse and an error code. Also from the computer being turned off during an installation.

Repair didnt work..in the end I just reinstalled. Hope you backed everything up!

You should still be able to access the files on the disk using some sort of live cd
