Hi
My wife unplugged from the mains my sons pc whilst it was in standby mode, when he came to turn it on this morning after said incident, it posts as far as the screen asking if you want to start in safe mode or as normal,if you choose either option it just stays as a black screen ,with the mouse cursor on which you can move but wont post into windows ,does any one have any ideas ,sorry i am not very good with the software side of thing. Thanks

Sounds as though unplugging the system while it was still technically powered and drawing "some" power in standby mode and crashed the HDD/Windows Install.

When it loads up, try loading up the start up repair software... if that cannot fix it, take out the HDD, sling it in your system, you system will recognize it, right click on the HDD, go to properties, tools tab and click on "error checking"... and make sure both selections are selected and scan.

This may take up to 30 minutes depending on the side and type of HDD it is. After, stick the HDD back in and should boot... if not, the HDD is done for and you may need to replace it.

(IF THERE IS A PARTITION FOR WINDOWS ON THE HDD, ONLY SCAN THE PARTITION)

Hope this helps.

If "Last know good configuration" does not do the trick, then do what Cinderz said. I have done this with a mates computer that would not load windows and it sorted it out a treat.

Only reason I know this works is because my old HDD (which I replaced yesterday) kept crashing out on me and had to get it working again by hooking it up to my misses system and fixing it the way I said.

Thanks for replies ,sorry did not respond ,I was very busy last week ,I tried all different things, ended up doing clean install ,the hard drive was usual teenagers mess ,now with clean install reload of all his favourites ,wow ,starcraft 2 league of legends etc ,all is running again ,the insides of his pc ,had enough fluff to stuff a pillow also ,so thanks again for peoples usual great help,

Teach your boy to clean it out every month or so as well. Bit of routine maintenance will help keep that thing on its legs longer. Glad to hear its working ok.
