Hi all,

I'm having a rather strange issue at the moment, my pc does not seem to complete post with my SSD plugged in.

The computer just hangs on this screen

I can view the SSD fine when I boot using a linux live cd and then plug the ssd in.

Does anyone have an recommendations of what to do to check if the ssd has stopped working / check the condition of the drive? I'd ideally have to do this via a boot disk of some description.

Sorry I forgot to mention the SSD type its a Crucial M4 64gb.

The system has been working fine with the SSD since I got it but It wouldn't boot up today

Check the firmware on the SSD and your BIOS. Also do you have SATA 6Gb enabled in the BIOS as some older SSD's wont work with this unless the fix has been implimented in the BIOS

Sorry I forgot to mention,

the system has been working fine for over a year or so with the SSD installed but it just wouldn't boot today for some reason. I've not modified any firmware on the ssd or updated my bios.

Funnily enough the SSD is recognised when the motherboard is set to IDE mode instead of SATA and it correctly recognises the drive but I still cant boot

:(

It posts now and trys to boot windows ( it wont because windows was previously configured to boot via ahci)

Strange I want to double check everything before buying a new SSD

tried clearing the cmos? leave motherboard battery out for 30minutes

beware as it will reset your bios/oc to default so make a note of settings beforehand

Cleared Cmos didn't work.
Then I updated the drive to the latest bios, didn't work.

The drive was correctly upgraded to the latest firmware by the manufacturers tool but the pc still hangs at post :(

and your using latest motherboard bios? tried booting from dvd/windows disc and doing a startup repair? do it two or three times as it usually takes that to fix it,thats if its a startup issue

so I've done the following so far:
  • Updated the motherboard bios
  • updated the SSD bios to latest version
  • Tried different cables
  • cleared CMOS

so just out of curiosity I plugged the SSD into my brothers laptop and low and behold it boots to windows fine.

Sounds like its the motherboard?

you deffo removed battery for 30 mins to clear cmos? and not by the clr scmos button or shorting the pins? sometimes battery removal is best

yup took it out for 30 mins and its still happening.

I'll go up and take it out for an hour or so and see if that helps

It might be worth trying to boot to safe mode, as this can sort out some drivers to do with the SSD, I had this before, just started to safe mode, let it finish booting and everything, then just restart it

can't even get into safe mode as it doesn't get past the achi startup screen :(

I've re-installed windows to my HDD and plugged the SSD in once windows had booted up and this is what SSDLife shows

I've no idea what's up,is it a gigabyte motherboard? I've known some boards take overnight to fully clear the cmos with battery left out, sounds bizarre but I've seen it fix the issue, could try that tonight, other than that Idk what's causing it

Yes sorry I should have said its a gigabyte ga-x58-usb3.

I'll do that tonight and see what happens tomorrow morning

You might need overnight then,I remember folks doing that on gigabyte x58 over on tweaktown forums,I can link you to latest beta BIOS aswell if the above doesn't work

Cmos battery removed now time to wait and see if it fixes it.

Could you link me to the beta bios? Or are they just the ones that are hosted on Gigabytes site?
