Concept2 indoor rowing

well.. I Think it was this thread I posted about my poor rowing earlier in the year. well after a few goes I can do 1Km in 3:58 and 2k in 9mins vastly improved :D.. I'm 16 my the way and 5ft 8 tall

i renember doing a 5k erg test for my uni team with a very heavy hangover from a cider session the night befor. not pretty. pulled a 20min 10sec. but could not move for the next 30min due to feeling so sick and turning bright green.

started rowing again over the summer and been doing some erg's. struggling to pull <7.40's 2k and <20min 5k's. it's hard to pull decent times when you're on your own. i find it better when your rowing with the rest of my 4 next to me and the rest of the club shouting in your ear.

rubbish tbh. i hardly notice the difference between 5 and 10.

Guessing you're quite a big strongish guy? If so then you probably won't. If not then your machine's buggered! :p

I do 10 sometimes but as a general body warm-up or workout. Not going hell for leather for a PB time.

Whey, the thread's back.

I got my PB for 2km down to about 7:15, then had a few weeks of weddings and unholy drinking and ruined myself. I'm at about 7:30 for the 2k, but because it's over so quickly I'm going to start doing the 5km. Another reason is that I only burn about 150 calories doing the 2km, and would like to burn more.

I like the advice of sticking to the target religously and going with it even though it doesnt feel like much at the start, I have a habit of shooting off and paying for it later in the row.

Anybody find their wrists ache on occasions after using the rowing machine? I play a lot of guitar and my fretting hand feels it after.

its all about your technique. go to the concept 2 website for guide.
don't bother trying to go as fast as you can at the start just try and get your technique correct and use a lower setting.

I've just got back from the gym and did the 5k. Was a bit apprehensive at first, but after I got into a steady rhythm it wasn't too bad.

For the most part I averaged about 1:58-2:00/500m, with the last 500 metres about 1:50 and got something in the region of ~19:35. I could've pushed harder throughout, but I didn't want to go off crazy and then burn 10 mins in. :p

Definitely feels better to start with 5k than 2k though. My arms were burning and my legs felt good when I went on the cycling machine after. Much more of a warm up than the manic 2k that I've been doing up until now. Looking forward to getting my time down now.

woot, didn't realise a thread existed on C2s. I got one off my brother so i'm starting tomorrow.

Beginners tips?

Work on your technique before you work on knackering yourself out :p

But seriously, there's a definite technique to rowing. If you perfect it you will go quickly, with less chance of injury, and achieve a good cardio workout. With a poor technique not only are you aksing for trouble, but you will most likely tire out your arms / back long before you are limited by cardio performance.

Better to get good habits ingrained from the start. It will be much harder to go back and correct your technique once you get used to doing it badly - believe me!

Regarding C2 performance, I like to go by preset times rather than distance. I've been doing 3*20mins or 3*30mins, going steady on the first two and hard on the last one. I did under 1:50 for the final 20 last week (1:49.5), and sub-1:52 for the final 30 (1:51.8 - felt harder than the sub 1.50 20min tbh).

Regarding physique and times - the lighter rowers seem to generally be better at the distance runs, whereas the heavier rowers are better at the high-power sprints. When I was rowing I used to beat the rest of my boat easily over 500m / 1K, but some of the guys who were 10kg lighter than me would regularly kick my ass in the 5k / 30min ergs.

At the moment I can do 1:24 for 500m, but a bigger guy like morba could almost certainly go sub 1:20 without much effort.

impressive. i've pulled a 1.34 for 500m, but being only 5,10 and only 68kilos doesn't help

1:34 is damn impressive for your height and weight...

500m are something like 75% raw power, 25% lactate tolerance. Short of putting on muscle mass there isn't really much you can do to improve 500m times.

I do think that bigger guys tend to be faster over a sprint. I have managed 500m in 1:31 and when i sprint the last 400m of the 2k i can maintain mid 1.30's and 1:26/7 peak (for about 10s :p ).

Trying to keep a fast pace going over 2k I find really hard. I managed a 7.37 for 2k yesterday and that was with playing with settings to get the screen setup at the start and warming up for 500m at 2.00 split. I`m sure i could get sub 7.30 at the moment, but how do people get below 7 mins!!

After my exams (2 weeks) im going to go for 5k (at least 3x week) to see if that helps with the endurance!

*edit* im 6ft3 and 90 kg - so on the larger side

im usually limited by the length of my stroke (no jokes), i can quite easily sit there and pull 34strokes a minutes for 5k but i haven't got the raw power and the height that the massive guys seem to.

getting back into it now a lot and even started wearing my lyrca's down the gym even though i look a right muppet as the rowers are right next to dumbell racks and the uneasy stares i got from some of the guys was weird
