Confederate flags in UK trucks? WHY?

It has highly dubious and sinister connotations. It's associated with the southern states in America, and many extreme far-right conservative Americans use it as a symbol during their protests against equal rights for homosexuals, minorities and certain religious beliefs.

Symbolism is also highly subjective. The swastika for example is a symbol of good luck to some, and a representation of Brahma or eternity to others. Of course, when we see a swasticka however, we immediately think of Nazism. A flag is no different.

Not really, seeing as the Union Flag is the flag of something that still exists.

The Confederacy no longer exists.

So something can only be bad if it no longer exists? Or is it that symbols are nothing more then a image which people self project their prejudice or beliefs into them. If there is no prejudice by the owner of the flag as he likes it for decorative purposes, then surely the prejudice is with the person complaining and stereotyping a person based on popular opinion.

What about all the moronic middle class Whites who wear clothes with the Imperial Japanese flag on? It seems to be quite fashionable now. These drones have no idea what the flag is and how their ancestors died fighting it.

Is this the Rising sun type flag? If the circle is offset, then it is a current naval ensign, and is no longer associated with the imperial forces.

Are you honestly saying to me that it's as simple as lorry drivers all liking the shape of the confederate flag?

It's all just a huge coincidence? Like girls like pink stuff?

Also I haven't complained or stereotyped. I exclaimed that I find it odd that it's one vocation in particular, truck drivers, that seem to have an obsession with this flag, and asked why.

You're the one getting stroppy on their behalf.

Personally, I think it's just fashion over here. It's a 'trucker' thing to do and conjures up romantic images of the US truckers.

Only over there it's about hanging black people from trees

I'm not getting stroppy on anyone's behalf. I am mealy providing another side to the argument.

So the same way the British Flag is used by the BNP? Is the British Flag inappropriate?

No, because the British flag represents the country and what it stands for. The confederate flag no longer represents the confederate states of America in a modern context, and is used as a symbol of the far-right conservative movement of which many members still want a secession based on traditional southern state values including racial segregation. They chose this particular flag as they felt the confederacy had the same ideals (which they did for the large part) whereas the British Union Jack doesn't really have the same ideology behind it. The BNP chose the flag, because hey it's the British National Party.

I expect you'll make another argument again, but it's the general consensus that the confederate flag represents the current underthinking of the southern states that many consider to be racist at worst and divisive at best.

I can't recall ever seeing a Confederate flag on a truck in the UK but I suppose it's no more or less objectionable than the flag when in America. It is a bit weird I suppose if they've got no links to America or the Southern States in particular but equally I find it a bit strange when people put up any flags or banners in their cars/trucks regardless - their choice and all that though.

I do wonder how many people are aware of the associations that the flag comes with but I suppose certain symbols transcend their origin or are subverted sufficiently to mean nothing like what they started out implying.

They're all rockin' rebels. In the days of CB you could get one over on The Man by telling each other where the Smokeys were, and all that. By having this symbol around you, it's a reminder that, yeah, I'm part of that scene. We got us a convoy, 10-4!

Yeah Boi!

A few weeks ago I was in the middle of nowhere, Louisiana, tubing down the Bogue Falaya river. Every house/trailer that backed onto the river had a confederate flag hanging from it. Every one. Oh, and a pickup truck :D

Well its just the same as all the truckers having those blue LED lights all over the cab and front of the cab.

****es me right off, as I am "sensitised" to blue lights (if u get me) so it always puts me on red alert whenever I see these gay as **** blue leds.

I will ask WHY for this too. Hopefully a ****er, sorry trucker can come along and answer this for us!!!
