Confessions of the System Builder...

Upgrading a PSU in my old PC i didn't realise i had to "break" the connector plug to suit my mobo, plugged the connector in with the end i could see flush, turned the machine on quite pleased with myself only to be met by a burning smell and a corrupt display, oops.

Only ever fully built a PC once, had previously just upgraded certain parts.

Main thing though was getting a new mobo, first time I'd ever bought one and wasnt too sure about the ATX / M-ATX etc. Installed all the components on the board, came to put it in the case and ooops, M-ATX case and full ATX motherboard... not gonna fit haha. Had to do a quick dash to the shops to get a bigger case!

Spent the next 3 days with schrodinger's GPU.

:p

I once plugged in a hard drive forgetting that the system was turned on. It didn't work after that.

And I always forget to wire up the case's front panel connectors switches and LEDs. I once sat there pressing the power button after a new build, getting really frustrated that it wouldn't turn on, only to realise I'd forgotten to wire up the switch again

I think a friend of mine did the stupidist thing, he'd bought a new GPU a few years ago with my advice but unfortunetly I wasnt able to be there in person... I gave him step by step instructions over the phone which where pretty idiot proof..... but apparantly after installing it his computer never worked, when trying to work out what he had done wrong he asked me...

"Was I supposed to turn it off first?"

Putting it all together, pressing the power button and not getting anything. I always think "****!" but then I notice that the CPU power isn't plugged in :P

Every time!

I have forgot the gfx power connections a couple of times.

I once connected a fan header on the mobo up to a fan while the pc was on which caused it to trip out, an old pc I didnt care about though.

Worst one recently I had a mains powered water pump cooling my old Q6600 and while testing my cousins pc I needed to free up a plug socket so I thought I'd unplug my amp, my ps had been on and running but 30 seconds later it shut down, I thought it was odd but it was only later I realised I had unplugged my pump and the machine had shut down due to the high temp it must have reached, good job the chips these days shut down to protect them selves, the machine ran fine later when I turned it back on with the pump running.

I forgot the kettle lead once & rang a mate crying that my Tower was dead. :o + :D
He was like, Have you got the mobo power leads in properly check them, No deals. :( After going through countless things he said Malc you have got the PSU switch On haven't you. Hang on I says I'll check.
Yep the switch is on & ......... **** **** The kettle lead isn't plugged in. :o + :D + :p
Mate says,
You ******** ****** + :p:p:p

Haha happened on my last build!!

Another one I had was when I built my friend's computer and switched it on but nothing happened. Looking all over we couldn't find anything wrong but it turned out to be one of those tiny cables to allow your power button to work wasn't plugged in properly...:s

Hahaha, gutted!! All fine but the main power just not connected... its a pretty important part :p

I bought a new GFX card and somehow blew the PSU (not sure why but it was a bit old) I went and bought a new one to find that although the power was coming on, the motherboard was beeping and the GFX was plugged nothing was appearing on my monitor. After an hour of messing around and swapping my GFX out for the old one and making sure the monitor was plugged in I came to the conclusion that the motherboard must have been faulty.
So I went out and bought a new one got home and found that nothing was appearing on my monitor still. Again messed around for another couple of hours swearing and cutting my hands several times on the case.
I looked at the monitor and thought "nah it can't be that surely" I pressed the on/off switch on my monitor... and tada! bios screen appeared. The standby light on my monitor was faulty and was always on no matter if it was switched off or on.
I was both elated and ****ed off at the same time.

when i tried to remove the cooler from 8800gt, didnt come off so screwed it back together, put in the machine and graphics corruption!! somehow this was driver related and reinstall fixed it. i was crapping myself

Started my system after a rebuild without plugging the pumps into the main power supply (I use a small one to run them during bleeding) resulted in a temp shutdown, the tubes near the cpu had no water in them at all... scary

doing some watercooling on an 2400 XP athlon, cant remember the silly volts that were going through it... went for a bath, came back to see if it was stable but it had been constantly restarting itself for a while by the looks of it. the tubes going to and from the waterblock were very very soft! thought they were just gona melt...
Forgot to put the dam pump on didnt i!

Ive made a few howlers lol

1: Installed XP on dads machine and accidently formatted the drive with all his data on - OOPS :p

2: When i got my very first CD writer, some sony 2x thing i plugged the molex power thing in upside down - the drive smoked nicely when powered on lol

And on more than one occasion ive scratched my head and then remembered i needed to plug in a cable lol

didnt secure my i7 properly in the cpu socket and when i titlted the case up out comes the i7. luckily the silver face was down so nothing got damaged!

shoddy wiring meant my wires got caught up in the cpu fan once and so didnt spin up luckily i realised straight away and pulled the plug.

stuffed up on fitting heatsinks allot so my temps were through the roof. think its takien me several tries each time wheter its the heatsink or the thermal paste

bought a cpu which "wasnt compatible" with my mobo but worked fine anyway.
(asus p5nesli with a core 2 quad 9450)

used that 9450 underclocked from 2.6 ghz to 2.0 ghz because the multiplier defaulted lower for several months without realising, probably something to do with the compatibility bacause when i did clock it right it gave me bsods and i had to downclock my ram from 800 mhz to 667 to make it stable.

my cabling still sucks.

think that's it.

I built an amd setup and plugged cpu fan in wrong place. It shut down twice due to temps before I realized why. Ebay'd it and the buyer is still very satisfied.
