Hi all,

I have a 30gb ssd as in my sig.(500mb free at prresent)
A 2tb drive for media (900gb free at present)
A old Samsung 250 drive soley for games.(135gb free at present)

My 30gb is a losing battle for space on windows 7 64 bit, however I am in two minds:

Just get a 64GB Drive

Save for a 256gb drive and replace places the games and OS on this.

If I get the 64gb ssd I would be able to upgrade my gfx sooner.

A bit torn !

Mmmm, slightly difficult choice.

However, I think going for the 256GB SSD is the best option. Installing games on an SSD does bring benefits (especially if you are impatient !). Games and game levels load a lot faster, and if there is any "mid level" loading to be done, your game will not pause as much if it's installed on an SSD (no proof of this, but it makes sense).

OK, if you have a large games collection, you`'ll have to pick which games to commit to SSD, but you should easily be able to get 4 or 5 full games installed, along with Windows and all you basic apps. It must be a bit of a struggle with 30GB, upgrading to 64GB will help, but going for 256GB will REALLY help.

I think the advantages of having plenty of SSD capacity will make up for the delay in gfx card upgrade. Not only that, if you are sticking with AMD, aren't they releasing a new range of cards soon ?

Just to add to this. If you do get a new ssd use you old 30gb ssd as a cache for your 2tb had to help speed that up.

Thanks for the replies!

I am not overly fussed with a new gfx soon as I have just got back into pc gaming. But yes i think there is also a new raft out now. Thanks for the advice! Seen a crucial m500 for £130, will save up that much, I could sue birthday money but thats been near banned for being used on tech!

I thought you needed to be hooked up via Msata to use a drive as a cache, sounds like a good way of using the 30gb drive. Its still in decent condition and cost £80 back when I got it so I would rather not waste it!

I have a 128GB drive, leaves plenty of room (about 50 gigs), without having to worry about space. I did optimise it a bit. No hibernation file, and most of my user folders moved to a hard drive.

64GB is enough, but you do need to keep an eye on what goes on it (using some HD file analyser is useful). 256GB is too much for just an app and OS drive, but hey, you can't have too much. You can put games on there of course. I have another 128GB for my go-to games, using SteamMover.

I've got a 64GB SSD for my OS (Win 7) and programs which currently has 10GB free. I also have a 128GB for my most used games which also has about 10GB free at the moment, but i do tend to be quite ruthless in what i keep on there and will remove stuff i don't play, backing up saves etc to an HDD when i do.

I then use an HDD for all my documents, photos and music.

I also set all my downloads to go to the HDD.

I like the set up above mainly because if i want to do a clean Windows install i can do so without impacting much else and all the install files for my favourite apps are still on the HDD from when i downloaded them.

I`ve got Win 7 64 Pro, Bishock Infinite, Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas installed (plus bits and pieces like Radeon Pro, Avast, Afterburner etc).

132MB free of 209MB (it's a 840 250GB with Over provisioning enabled).

It seems there's enough space for a fair few more full game installs.

I would be OK with a 120GB or 128GB SSD, but having double that capacity means that I don't have to bother too much about what I install (at the moment !).
