Im going to buy a samsung p2450 monitor, some how i doubt my 8800gts 640mb will be up to the task. Would a gtx 480 be a suitable replacement?

I would say it will. Remember the noise, heat and power needed for it though.

The 6950 is also a viable alternative, better than a 560 by some margin even at stock. They are also more efficient and do not have the power requirements of a 480.

And, if you get a 6950, don't forget to get a rev1 and flash it to 6970 shaders...

Nothing wrong with 1680x1050 though - nicer res than 1920x1080 for work any day.
